Yes. Think of it this way, actual volume (loud) is transmitted by moving air (quantity of air). The more air you move, the louder you are. Thus, having a speaker that has phyical size (based on the diameter), that moves forwards and backwards more (aka xmax that we always discuss) than other speakers gives you more potential for volume, more potential to use your amp's power...with a caveat that lower frequency takes more movement to reproduce.

It's the reason people say displacement is what matters and to quit focusing on the watt ratings of their speakers. They'll run out of displacement before they ever reach that much power. Displacement isn't published on common, commercially manufactured cabs. It's a number that doesn't look nearly as impressive as saying "1000 watts, man".

That was definitely the case for me. The very first fEARful I heard was the 1212/6/1 that I built. Fortunately I wasn't disappointed.
It is very difficult to make an objective comparison between cabinets even when you have them side by side, as the time lag in switching cables and adjusting volume to compensate for varying efficiency leaves a lot of room for imagination. I have tried to compare my fEARfuls to my SVT cabs, and it is difficult, if not impossible to quantify the subtle things. I thought about making a switcher that would switch between cabs and simultaneously make gain adjustments via the effects loop of my amp, but in the end decided I just wasn't that curious. The fEARfuls scored big points for me on the obvious, especially the dispersion and low freq extension, so I'll let someone else that's more curious build a proper test rig.

...and this is the reason why Talk Bass exists - you have the opportunity to discuss speaker design with people who understand the parameters, can make suggestions for improvements and you also can discuss the performance of products with people who have had experience before you actually build/purchase something.

How did we get on without it.... we would all have 410's I suppose and live with it....

Yes, but there is so much inaccurate information and opinion obscuring the accurate and empirical data, that it is often very difficult to make any kind of decision based on what I read here. There is a lot of good information, but it is not always easy to glean it from a string of contentious posts. And then there is the whole subjectivity of what "sounds good".
Having said that, it is still great to have a gathering place where people with a common interest can have a free exchange of information.

Yes, a lot of misinformation, sure. Still, tons more people that have accurate info & are readily willing to share it than any other bass site. Far & away the best bass forum. In a class of its own by a w-----i-----d-----e margin :bassist: .
