crest vs crown power amps?

O.K., that's it. Munji has helped me make my decision; I'm scapping buying an MTD-635 or a Lull PJ5 until I can get my Crown Macro-Tech!!!


O.T. Seriously, I can't say I ever had a single reliability problem with any of the Peavey gear I owned back in the day, and I beat the living daylights out of all of them, including a CS400 and CS800 power amp. I can only hope my CA-9 will be as bulletproof.

I said there's nothing wrong with it. In fact, I've owned three Peavey bass amps and a ton of their PA equipment. That also was "back in the day" (late 70's) when "Peavey sux" had an element of truth to it. Their quality these days is far superior to the old stuff, but I just can't pass an opportunity to nig-nag the Peavey devotees.

A lot of pro PA companies use Crest amps, and they get good reviews over at ProSoundWeb.com. I do think that Crown amps are held in a little higher regard, though.

I mean, heck, I even said something nice about an Ibanez bass the other day over in the bass forums.

Thanks for your input Bob, I was having a Little difficulty Explaining Crown's definition of running Parallel Mono; which is ln essence, combining the sum total of channels,one, and two, and running the two amps together as one @ 2 or 4 ohms. I remeber that my CA9, when in parallel mode, was more like stereo mode; you'd feed channel A input, and drive channels A and B speaker loads separately.

I used to work at Crest, so I was initially puzzled by Crown's parallel mode also when I first learned about it. Most brands do it the way Crest and QSC do. There are advantages and disadvantages to both approaches. The important thing is to know the differences, and never connect amp outputs together unless they are specifically designed to do so, as with the Crown amps.

For the prices you can pick them up used, I'd find it hard not to go with a CA9. And yes, it will totally kick bootay with an NV series cab (or two!).

On the budget end, there is the Samson which isn't talked about much on the forum, but which happens to be the brand easiest to get in Hong Kong (they're manufactured North of here, though the firm is in NY state). I have the SX1200, and the sound is flawless into an Accugroove Tri112L. Downside, they are really heavy because of their oversized toroidal transformer (the 1200 must approach 50lb.) and I've heard that they don't like 4 and 2 ohm amps. Bridged mode definitely requires an 8 ohm.
