Criminally commercially unsuccessful bands

I like or love more than half of these bands, but there is absolutely not a Stones, Petty, or Michael Jackson "IT" factor to any of them. They weren't victimized by The Machine deciding to not spoon feed them to the unwashed masses; sure they were good, but they just weren't Sprignsteen or Pearl Jam good.
Gentle Giant... even when I was regularly listening to Stravinsky, The Residents, and lots of other very not-pop music, GG stood out as entirely unlistenable. They knew with every note they played that they were not going to be commercially successful.

I used to see them at Mississippi Nights in St. Louis, which was a really small place. It was great to see them in a small venue.
Totally agree. But I think they will achieve commercial success if they keep it up.

Saga is one of my favorite prog/rock bands. They have been big in Europe and Puerto Rico and had some limited success in Canada and the U.S. I always thought they should have been much bigger in North America. They stayed together recording and touring since 1977.
I liked Hum before they were signed. I think I saw them at least 3 times on campus at various small venues.
They had the Orange Amps even then which were cool and very tough to come by in 1992.
Here's a quote from lead singer Matt at a Trenos gig in Urbana, (in the mic), " Does anyone in the crowd have a glasses strap? I gotta rock and I gotta see."
He ended up making a temp glasses strap using DUCT tape!
As I said...liked them at the time but thought of them.as a student band just like my band.
Lake Street Dive is great! They are playing theaters now.
Good call! Don't think Mel ever played with Rainbow though, but definitely a member of Whitesnake. Trapeze should have been huge...
