Damon, when KJ and his associates come up, these things didn't really exist for jazz players. They and others before them built the city they are working in.

Sure, but they did not earn it, They were given it. Like I said before, Shipp's article is not perfect - it is a bit whiny. However, it is a person with an established career making some valid points. My girlfriend was the grant writer for a place that puts these gigs on, so I know the exact fees, what actually comes in at the door and where the rest of the money comes from.

In the smaller scenes one or two players kind of take over. Some deserving some not - they suck up resources instead of create their own situations. All I am looking for is a fair way to address these situations in place of the "gag order" in place at present.

They didn't work to get where they are? I don't follow that. Jack DeJohnette? are you kidding? If you say so..

Your girlfriend probably would give you a gig if only she had a gig;)..somehow you are sounding like the Wizard of Oz Lion singing "If I Were KIng of the Forest".:D

Really Damon..with all you talent and experience..you should know more than anyone that it's a gamble to rely soley on the success of others for an absolute future for yourself in the music business.

Oh they worked for sure. As I have said, we are looking at musicians of quality is all these situations, sometimes better in the past.

As I have said, it isn't really about Jarrett or me. I am a fan of his music, I have loved the two concerts I have seen and I love most his albums.
It is not really any question me wanting those gigs. I am more than happy with where I am at, my playing and recording opportunities are satisfactory - a small miracle even - given all the factors (not living in Europe, NYC or Chicago, not playing commercially viable music, etc.).

I am for sure not coming form a place of "I should have this gig". I will cancel a gig of my own to hear someone like Reggie Workman play.

My criticisms are usually that some other master musician should get it the same treatment, or that for what they are getting they should have practiced before the gig.
It is really about the gag order.
