Congrats on the gig!
If you don't mind a few questions:
- How did you get your own quarters on the ship? I understand that that's usually reserved for guest bands. Are you technically ship staff, or no?
- You're transcribing a lot of music. Does the majority of your repertoire and setlist require you (personally) to sight read? Or are you playing standards and songs that are well-known to you?
- How long are you going to stick with the cruise ship gig?
- What's your method for transcription? In the past, when I've done it, it's just been a matter of listening and listening and relistening. (I used Dorico to do a multi-instrument transcription of Curtis Mayfield's "Move On Up", as well as "Pick Up The Pieces" by Average White Band, and even though I have a good ear it was just a slow process overall. Especially with Move On Up - seemed like every time I listened, there was a new instrument waiting for me.)
- Final question - if you don't mind me asking, how old are you? I'm 35 and maybe in five to ten years I could see myself doing a cruise ship gig for six months to a year or so.
1. Yes, we are a guest band with passenger status.
2. Yes, strong sight-reading is essential, simply due to the size and diversity of the repertoire (over 500 songs, ballroom, pop, soul, jazz, rock etc, including medley arrangements).
3. The current contract is until mid November but I envisage returning for more stints in 2022 and beyond.
4. I listen carefully and write down what I hear! I don’t know how to explain the process other than stating the obvious!
5. A well-preserved 51 years of age!
