Crusty old basses

I like vintage instruments as well as the next person, but I am really put off by the amount of embedded crud, scuzz, and slime that people leave on them for authenticity or fear of damaging by cleaning. I don't want a DNA sample from every person who every played the instrument. Gross!

I'm nuts, right? I should just let it go?[/QUOTE

You ain't seen nothing yet..I think my own DNA is acceptable..Anyway, don't look at this while eating.

I've seen a few of Dave's irate videos, but not the "DNA removal" quip. Inferior minds think alike, I guess. Dave's funny. I would expect his comeback to anyone overwhelmed by his persona would be "lighten up." I did see the Ric rage one.

When I first heard about the Ric rage vid on talkbass, I knew it had to be Dave. I'd recognize his cranky tech shtick anywhere. Keeps him interesting.

Gooched is a useful term as well.

Somebody mentioned Ronsonol lighter fluid on another thread, supposedly safe for the finishes and evaporates away, but of course, highly flammable. It wouldn't have occurred to me on general principles. Anybody use it?

I had a Warwick FNA that I bought used. It was a late 90's model with basically no finish. It - of course- was filthy dirty. A friend suggested lighter fluid to clean it up. Worked GREAT. I followed up with Warwick wax and the bass looked great.

The way I look at it, nobody is really meant to play the bass but the owner, so treat it as you wish...but please give it a thorough cleaning before selling it or bringing it in for repair work...heck, give it a shine for all the TB glamour shots too while you're at it. Worn and well played basses are great, what's not great is the visible skin flakes, drool speckles over the pickguard and the mystery slime caked into the pickup poles. For crappin out loud, wipe the thing down if you're gonna be forcing us to look at!
