Current Guilty Pleasure Listening?

So I bought the Coverdale Page CD at a thrift store a while back and am feeling a little guilty for listening to it as much as I have been.
It's not real current or timely and I've always found Mr Coverdale to be perhaps a little corny. He looks like he just stepped away from oral surgery at California Jam and sort of sings that way too and how could Richie Blackmore be allowed to replace Ian Gillian and Roger Glover like that? We won't get into Tawny Kitaen or Whitesnake.
Then there's post Zeppelin Page...
But somehow I keep playing the CD and enjoying Coverdale's performance which Mr Plant dubbed David Cover Version and Page's songwriting and guitar work which ticks many Zeppelin reference points.


What are you listening to a little too often and are ashamed to admit to?

I still go on my '60s Pop binges.
The Association, The Monkees, The Zombies, The Buckinghams, Motown, BST, Chicago, Sly, The Carpenters, Three Dog Night, etc.

...and '80s MTV-style binges.
The Producers, Missing Persons, The Fixx, Tears For Fears, Duran Duran, Haircut 100, Thomas Dolby, etc.
Can't get enough of Shawn Colvin's "Sunny Came Home" video (w/ Michael Rhodes on bass, IIRC).

I just played the Association's Greatest the other day and frequently play the Carpenters and Motown and my 80's guilty pleasures tend to be off brand Genesis, Yes and second tier prog like Flash and Focus. I tried revisiting Thrak the other day and now clearly remember why I wandered off around that time.

I have a thing for 60’s middle-of-the-road, adultish pop stuff, that still had a bit of hip, swinging kick to it; it’s earworms from what my parents would listen to as a kid. But this is my favorite, the bass parts(played on a Jazz with a pick)undoubtedly left an impression...


If that wasn’t enough Teutonic schmaltz for you, here’s were it really gets weird; I keep track of this guy as a joke as he’s just so damned bizarre, biggest recording star in Germany, king of what’s called ‘schlager’ music...

Just like Pat Boone, he did a late in career metal album...

This album cover(always on ‘worst of’ lists and exuding a Norman Bates vibe)speaks(and creeps)volumes...

And yes, there’s even a ‘tribute’ performer...

The concept of “guilty pleasure” is that you find yourself attracted to something that you intellectually know is crap, or at least sub-standard, but emotionally you still indulge in. You can be disgusted with yourself, but you don’t care, you still derive some vicarious thrill. Maybe it’s nostalgia, maybe it’s a certain aspect of your taste that didn’t mature, maybe you’re entertained by ‘so bad it’s good’ aspects or irony. Ever watch “Mystery Science Theater 3000”? Now, this is an entirely different situation from being a fan of an idiosyncratic or visionary artist that most people ‘don’t get’ or are maybe even repulsed by. It’s their loss, they’re the ones with no taste(as far as you’re concerned). For me, in my life, that has been artists ranging from The Velvet Underground to Kate Bush to the Cocteau Twins to Scott Walker. Currently I’m nuts about two very different female artists, Anna Von Hauswolff from Sweden, and Aldous Harding from New Zealand. I certainly don’t feel guilty for liking their work, nothing cheesy about it, but I do realize that their stuff could be annoying or unfathomable to certain other people. But they have no taste.

I'm aware of the concept, but why would anyone be "disgusted with yourself" for enjoying something that isn't hurting anyone. It's baffling to me.

In theory, you’re hurting your own rep, potentially. Come on now, hasn’t there been someone you know that declared their admiration for something you’d wouldn’t be caught dead liking? It’s human nature. Sometimes you do want to sit at the cool kids’ table of life, and you don’t want to run the risk of admitting you can’t help liking some turd of a song(or whatever).

All depends on how high up you hold your self image I suppose.

Since my friends and family have been sadly shaking their heads over me for most of my years, and I don’t take myself all that seriously to begin with, I’m immune to their consultations as Bowie so aptly put it. I’m also acutely aware of my own personal shortcomings. So it’s not like I’ve got the comfort of self delusion or the opportunity for denial working for me on that score. :laugh:

But to your point, with me a “guilty pleasure” is something I do (and enjoy doing!) when I really should be doing something else. ;)

I get a bit taken by long playing compilations — our version of the mix tape or the playlist, in days of yore. I don't know. It's a quiet rebellion for me now. Some of the covers are a good laugh, and the music takes me back :) The last I got was The Furry Burst of Legends ;)

Steering clear of commercial radio has its merits — the time warp factor and the ads can be a little stultifying sometimes, musically speaking — but when they drop this sort of stuff, and you can get it for a song, I'm in. I admit, It's a weakness ;)

I've been rooting around in some prog-ish music lately mostly centered around Invalid Link Removedwho is an underground sort of fellow who has been around for a while. Lonely Robot , Kino, Frost* are mostly his projects but he has also played with John Wetton, Arena and others in the Prog field. Most recently he did some shows with Fish.

Lonely Robot is a 3 CD cycle about a Robot on a Mission to study the Universe but he is lost on Earth trying to understand humans when we don't understand ourselves.
Kino has several CDs and Frost* also has several CDs.
