Can i answer that?
Active pickups have less windings and because the output level is low with less wire, they put an preamp in the pickup, and seal the pickup with epoxy (or w/e).
With Active Pickups, u can't go Passive.
With Passive pickups and Active preamp, u can go active with a switch or just removing the preamp.

Just out of curiosity, do you wind up all of your pickups to the same number of turns?? Do you also use the same guage wire for all of your pickup projects??? Also, do the size of the pole pieces have anything to do with the number of turns in the pickuup????

What do you mean by "transition block"?
I know what it is but never saw the point.
Do you use it just to cover up the part of the neck which runs through the body, or do you infact see a sonic benefit/effect in such a "block"?

Nope, every pickup is wound differently depending on the sound the customer is looking for.
For me the transition block is just an aesthetic choice. Others will certainly opine differently.
I too tend to think of them as an aesthetic thing and have done for a long time.
I was very interested though, to see how someone like you, who builds instruments, sees it.

Hey Rudy, I don't weigh the bass until it's got everything on it ...but don't expect it to be too light.
Started finish sanding today. I will probably start applying the sealer and spraying sometime next week. Bob ...you're next

now in that above picture i see the neck thru laminate, do you keep it the same width when you glue on the body wings? or do you taper it and then glue?

Question:
Is the right arm contour on Rudy's bass more like how we discussed for mine (with less exposed contrasting rear wood)?

well, thank you. I'm glad you trusted me on your builds and hope to live up to the expectation.
Regarding the contour on this one, it's not really as pronounced as I generally do it, but it's not as subtle as your bass will be. You can't see it very well, but the top is really thick (over 5/16") on this one, which kind of makes up for the wood removed for the contour.
