I don't know about Stambuagh but Stambaugh is supposed to be pretty good.

My preference is for a Ken Lawrence bass - the best build around and tone that will knock you on you butt! My #1 bass!

Sorry for the delayed response. I posted this shortly before leaving work and didn't have the chance to get online when I got home.

As far as what I'm looking for... I play a wide range of music from rock to jazz to funk ect... As of lately I have been exploring the upper registers on my Lakland but am quite limited at only 22 frets.

I have played the F-bass and Elrick and think that both are equal as far as prefrence but have to different sounds. I like the Fbass preamp and pickups but I like the feel of the elrick better (unless I'm sitting). The thing that bugs me about Elrick is that he essincially wants to charge me $2000.00 to have a Buckeye top and he won't even let me select it.
The Jerzy I plan on playing soon. They have one at The Atlanta Bass Gallery. The Stambuaghs are always being raved about in this forum and because money is an object his basses have to be considered.

As for all the other bass mentioned some of these I have considered others I haven't thought about and should probably do some research. This is my first custom bass and though it is very exciting I want to make sure that I am making the right decision. I am not rich and don't plan on owning several of these. (though I would like too) It is a lot of money to me and I'm in no hurry. The longer it takes the easier it is for me to fund it.

If money is a bit of an issue, I think your choices stated in the poll narrow down quite a bit, basically to the Stambaugh with the Elrick in 2nd place. Jerzy's basses are kick-*ss beautiful, but they're not cheap, nor is the F bass.

Of course, being the fanatic that I am, I would also suggest FBB Custom, priced very nearly identical to the Stambaugh's and equal in build quality and playability. The primary difference between Stambaugh and FBB is the overall style/physical appearance of their basses, but both are excellent choices, as is the LeCompte .... :cool:

I'm telling you, folks, Skjolds are stupid good basses for the money. Talk to Pete about a 'real world' price, and I think you may be amazed (granted, the prices are going up for 2007, but even with the increase, they are still a bargain, IMHO).

The two Skjold's I've handled were beautifully built ... not my personal cup-o-tea body-wise, but the craftsmanship was stunning :D

There are so many good choices right now for custom basses in the $2K - $2.5k range .... :cool:

Make sure you consider a Skjold as well - the price will come in below any of the others you mentioned, and the playability and build quality are right there with all of them.

Editorially, I have to say that other sixes I have picked up have had intimidating necks. Although the string spacing on mine is neither wide nor narrow (18mm I think), the neck is shallow and very easy to move on. I have had no trouble integrating it into my playing.

Get very specific as to what you like, and not just in tone. Body shape and the kind of playability a bass has plays a major role- I've sold many basses that sounded great but because they didn't feel as great as another kind of bass, they had to go. Do you like sharp edges or rounded edges? Heavy weight or light? Bolt-on or neck through? Do you need super-accessible high frets? Do you prefer a certain kind of pickup placement? How long are you willing to wait for your custom to get finished? Is resaleability an important factor to you? Etc., etc.

Best post in the thread so far. Know what you want, then communicate with a builder who can get you there.

It's probably just as obvious what my main choice has been but there are a few others I'd also recommend from personal experience.

I agree with Bryan and Brad. There are just so many choices out there these days that you really just need to know what you want, find some builders who's style and price works for you, then make some calls to different builders to see who is the most helpful and also you connect with personally.

For affordable (relatively speaking) builders, I'd personally suggest:

Stambaugh
Ristola
CB Basses (Cliff Bordwell)
Skjold (I could't get a bass from Pete personally as I don't want a 35" scale length. I do hear that they're great basses, and I've met Pete. Great guy.)

If I were to order a bass tomorrow, I'd probably order one from Brian Ristola (www.ristolainstruments.com). He also owns www.bestbassgear.com. I like his design, his basses play unbelievably well, sound great and just feel right in my hands. The feel of his necks are amazing.

I play a Skjold 6 currently, and have another in the works.

Having owned or played all of your choices, plus Modulus and Kinal, all in 6 string configurations, my Skjold is my favorite. It is THE bass for me. I'd bet that Pete Skjold could do that for you as well.

Really? Most of the Fbasses I've seen have higher street prices than Elrick's singlecut line, which is quite a bit more than the (equivalent in build to Fbass) bolt-on Elricks. They both have fairly high upcharges for different kinds of fretboards, etc., so I can see how certain options could make an F cheaper.
