Cherry is a great body wood. My bass has a cherry body. It'll give you a nice tight bottom with some low mids. It can be a little bright though so maybe use a warmer fingerboard wood to balance it out. I used ebony and it's too bright for me.

Thanks,guys!! I'm very pleased with it. Apparently, you know you've played bass too long when the lack of a low B string doesn't feel right. :D

I'm very relieved it turned out alright. I'm used to taking risks and trying new or relatively unknown things. I was a little afraid that this would be difficult to play or maybe a little too out there, even for me. It took a good amount of thinking and playing around with math. As luck would have it, the strings and fan work great! The guitar is normal enough that I don't need to worry about getting a normal acoustic. It fits into a normal guitar case and a Shubb classical capo works.

I still might get a harp guitar some day.

Mahogany body, maple top, walnut/wenge neck , ebony fingerboard
Nordy dual-humbuckers, Audere 6-Z preamp with freq level trim pots accessed in back and master eq in front.
Bridge made from Schaller 8 saddles and a Bruce Johnson built chassis of my design.

Holy crap! You never disappoint. I'm very interested in the 12, as I keep thinking about having a shorter scale 6 made...but of course the fretless 9er is sick too. :D Two great builders as far as I can tell.

I think I might at some point. I prefer keeping instruments $10k or less since I'm simply too much of a whore. It's a little challenging to find harp guitars in that price range. If the company has built for anyone relatively "famous", then the price doubles.

I've started talking to a builder. There are a lot of logistics I need to investigate first.

I would be in serious trouble if I lived near Gryphon Stringed Instruments. They had a 28 5/8" barritone that would must be deep and huge! I might ask about the fanned 12 string. I'm not sure how well that would work.

I went 33” mostly to put a little less stress on the neck. That and to make sure it fits in a standard case or bag.
Alan from ACG has been awesome to work with.
I started out asking for something less custom, but Alan was so receptive to ideas, it's become a bit more exotic.:rolleyes:

The fact that this is my 2nd LeCompte, with a third (more traditional) build on the way says it all about my opinon of how he operates.

You say my concepts terrify you- - - imagine the courage of the builders!
It’s a fairly awesome era for bass players when you can find highly skilled and daring builders.

I don't envy the luthiers who turn our monstrosities into reality. I often wonder how much Kevin Robertson, Cliff Bordwell, Chris Stambaugh, or Rob Allen cringe when they read my e-mails. We're definitely in a nice era for custom instruments!

I very much like instruments that are way over the top and interesting. A fringe benefit is that most guitarists don't just walk up and grab our gear out of intimidation! :p

Great compliment! It’s funny because recently I was complimenting RLK on the amount of “mould breaking” thought he puts into each one of his basses. I’m also indebted to him for the very same thought he put into solving a hardware design flaw that would have held up both our ACG bass builds for absolutely ages.

+1 re Alan, the 6 string bass we first started discussing has now become a 10 string headless fanned fretless/fretted hybrid (no progress pictures yet I’m afraid).

Thanks for the nice words.
Maybe its a matter of perspective, but I really don't think I'm breaking any molds.
I approach each builder with ideas that I think plays to their strengths.
Those ideas are usually inspired by their designs and their prior work.
Bud LeCompte had already built some retro-modern basses, a kick-@$$ 8 string ERB and a beautiful 2x5 10 string before I approached him.

AND it's always a great honor when they approve of the idea.

@Spade2you: You think I ask for scary specs?!
It takes over ten syllables just to describe the type of bass Sei24 is having built!
Here's a good case in point about what I mentioned above---
Truthfully; I was hesitating to approach Alan with a headless niner until I saw what he had cookin' with this guy .
