Custom Ibanez

The all maple and basswood bodied SR basses sound practically the same. Body wood makes so little difference to my ears that it's not even worth caring about, for me anyway.

I've never tried an Ibanez with a basswood body but I have tried a few with maple bodies and the Ashula, which had an ash body, and the difference was immediately apparent. I tried a 90s SR406 and I really dug it in comparison to these newer ones. The Ashula was, hands down, the best thing I've ever heard from Ibanez and I wish they'd release a "normal" 6 string like it.

One day I compared some Ibanez sound gears, one with ash, one with mahogany, one with mahogany and a maple top, one with maple, one with basswood, and one with an agathis body.

Each one had very subtle differences, but they all sounded like Ibanez sound gear basses.

That much I do agree, though to me, the differences between them weren't so subtle.

I don't think I'll ever actually have my cake and eat it too with Ibanez instruments, though.

My favorite tone is that of a P bass. And no Ibanez I've ever played has ever nailed the P tone.

EDIT: Also, fyi the SR Prestige and SR Premium basses all have mahogany bodies (except the SR4500/4505).

Talking current production, mostly.

I like the soundgear neck and body. Both in looks and playability.

But I like the P bass tone.

Not necessarily. The old SR800s and SR1000s are heads and shoulders above the prestiges of this generation, imo. And yes, I've owned both. The newer ones have cool woods and bart pups, but they just don't measure up, to me.

Talking current production, mostly.

I like the soundgear neck and body. Both in looks and playability.

+1 the ashula is the best ibanez bass I've ever played. Sounded like a high end boutique. Wish they made a 5 string fretted version

Ok, now I'm sitting on some Warmoth quotes and I'm thinking about whether or not I really want a custom SR. I feel like I'd have more fun with a Warmoth Iceman build than a CS SR500. Even though it's not an SR, the Custom Iceman(reverse tele neck, MM pups, all mahogany) may be a better buy.





I still want that CS SR500 tho...

Investment assumes it will appreciate over time. Often most custom jobs aren't worth as much as you paid if you decide to sell it.

I wouldn't sell a Warmoth though. As much as some people may like someone else's Warmoth build, no-one is gonna like it enough to want to buy it.
