Custom Speaker Grill

Just finished restoring a 1973 (original owner, sentimental) double 15” Acoustic cabinet with exohyde. Project came out nice, new handles corners.Any improvising on a speaker grill.? I need something 34”tall 26” wide.I’ve tried getting pricing on black mesh car grills to your big box store items. Any insight where I can get something?trying to stay away from the waffle grills

Oh GAWD do I hate waffle grills as well. They just reek of the "yeah I bought this car subwoofer from a guy in a white van for $50" vibe.

Many years ago I wound up buying some 15" grills that were far nicer, they had a fine mesh (metal with holes), and a rubber surround to damp the vibrations from the metal grill. I have them on a pair of old JBL spec 4530 scoops and an old Sunn PA cabinet I made into a drum monitor.

Some years later I wanted some 10" versions for a homemade bass cab, but I could no longer find them. So I bought these similar ones (from Crutchfield I believe) but they are metal with no dampers and attach to a metal frame that goes on top of the speaker.

They look nice but I wind up popping the grills off because they vibrate at low volumes; but that cab never leaves the house.

I would post your request over on the Acoustic Club, tons of very knowledgeable guys there; if you still had the frame for the original grill cloth you could cover in the original style grill cloth if that is available.

These guys do a great job: Reliable Hardware Company E-Commerce Web Site

Personally, I love waffle grills though. Yes, really. ;)

There's bound to be a metal fab shop somewhere near you. They'll have a scrap pile of perforated aluminum and/or steel, expanded steel, etc . Theyll have everything they need to one-off a grill for you, flat or bent. You'll have to put a finish on it, but Rust Oleum has tons of good products.

My my. Lol yay another chance to post a.pic. This grill is 11 x 44 (15ga perforated stainless steel) and bent for a 1/2" standoff. Local guy charged me $60.

I know, I know. You've all seen it. But I can't stop looking at it. By far not a honeymoon phase. I love my new cab!!
