I’ve done a combo with radiator screen before. It’s stamped steel that comes in a lot of cool patterns. You can find it at most big box hardware stores. Just get the larger gauge because the paper thin stuff will crease.

Expanded metal? Paint it black.

I used expanded metal from the big box store, inexpensive, durable, and paintable. It came in sheet/half sheet. I left it unpainted over black/silver grill-cloth on a 2x12 custom cabinet.

This is a bit left field but I have used the bottom of those big plastic bread creates you see stacked out the back of grocery stores. Light, easy to cut and work, sprayed black. See pic

Pretty much what happened to me when I removed the grill from my SWR Goliath II. My fingers got grabbed by the grill with a pain I still remember.

I changed the look of my MarkBass cabs simply by attaching some 1/4" black foam grille cloth to the inside of the stock metal screens with 3M77. Amazon has all kinds of foam speaker grille material.

I also hate the look of round waffle grilles for the same reason as @Analogeezer

The only thing better than waffle grilles are waffle grilles with stars stenciled on them.

Nothing wrong with an old tie dye shirt. Any material will do.
The speaker clamps are wire clamps.

I like waffle grills for being simple and functional -- and since it's the least material over the front, it can hypothetically help make the box lighter than a full-front grill. But they always look a little cheap, and I wonder if part of the problem is because of the mounting ears. An undisrupted circular profile would look nicer. Don't know how you can help that, except maybe by buying them oversized, cutting off the ears and hoping the holes you drill in the ring don't split the metal.
