Custom Speaker Grill

Just finished restoring a 1973 (original owner, sentimental) double 15” Acoustic cabinet with exohyde. Project came out nice, new handles corners.

per the discussion: i like 'em all! if the grill prevents my foot (or anyone else's foot or bottle) from going through the speaker cone = good stuff! form = cool stuff, function = real stuff.

I need something 34”tall 26” wide.I’ve tried getting pricing on black mesh car grills to your big box store items. Any insight where I can get something?trying to stay away from the waffle grills

Uhh.. there was a place online that sold sheets of punched out grills,. sorry cant remeber the site, but Home depot sells sheet metal maybe they might have something youd like? I DIY mine using auto grill I painted I looks nice, cant tell its "homemade!"

I can attest to the quality of the work by Reliable Hardware. About ten years back, I ordered two custom speaker grills. I had them fold the edges over 90 degrees, and gave them very exact measurements.

Then I surprised them by saying I’d pick them up in person. Was no problem. (instead of shipping it - I guess they don’t get many people picking up in person)

The grills were spot on exact on fitment - I mean, they fit perfectly. Even the fold over on the sides was to my measurements so the grills sat flush with the outer sides of the cabinet.

Hey bro check these out man, our store bought way to many of these and my manager told us to get rid of them...we have no room in our store room for these and we are practically giving them away at $300, me: no way. How about $200? Nope, C'mon man they are $1000 speakers, me: haha not a chance. How about $100? me: not gonna happen.

The 4x8 and 6x8 cabs have grills I ordered off Reliable Hardware. Extremely happy with the results.

I certainly know of it, but it didn't really happen here in New Zealand.

Me, I'm just having trouble picturing the use of a waffle grill to cover a speaker cabinet.

The "White Van Guys" were everywhere in the 70's and 80's, it was a sort of scam.

You would be approached by these guys in a parking lot, 95% of the time in a white van.

The pitch varied but it was basically "we have all this cool stereo stuff our boss has told us to unload and we can sell you this awesome speaker for like 90% off."

Car stereo speakers and amps too.

The gear was not usually stolen, but cheap, crappy offbrand stuff that sucked. the more savvy White Van Guys would produce some ad copy showing these stereo speakers they were going to sell you for $200 normally cost $1,000, that kind of thing.

Anyway the stereo speakers AND ESPECIALLY THE CAR STEREO SPEAKERS often had the waffle grills on them, because back then they were like mullets and Member's Only jackets, believe it or not actually considered to be "cool looking".

So you got the speakers home and they soon blew up or stopped working because well they were just cheap crap, but the "White Van Guys" of course were long gone by then.

I don't know for sure but I always figured the whole scam was sort of a MLM thing where the guys in the white vans didn't really make much but the suppliers of the crap gear and the distributors did.

I don't recall them ever selling musical gear or amps, just home and car stereo stuff as that was a much bigger market and musicians are harder to dupe.

My my. Lol yay another chance to post a.pic. This grill is 11 x 44 (15ga perforated stainless steel) and bent for a 1/2" standoff. Local guy charged me $60.

That I've seen, but never the stereo guys. I didn't even own a car for a good part of the 70s and 80s though, maybe that's why I was blissfully unaware.

Yes we had them up here in the 80s. Trying to remember the brand (brands) of speakers they were selling. I seen a few set in action, they were actually OK.
