They'll even print boxes with your custom strings and name of the set.

I looked up DR Legends on the DR website, and below the listing for the available pre-packaged sets, there is this statement (emphasis mine):
“Custom sets and singles are available in all of the gauges above through your favorite retailer”.

So are you sure that you can order any other gauge or length? It’d be really nice if you could, since custom flats are really hard to find.

Well I have done it many times, for custom strings for my 24 string Harpejji, for strings for my 12 string fan fret Mobius Megatar, custom sets of 4 strings low C tuned in 5ths, and of course the custom piccolo bass gauges for a couple basses I have made.

So yeah they do.

Flats I have no idea, I never needed them in custom sizes.

I just send an email to my customer service agent at DR.

I called them in the not too distant past and asked about a .055 Hi-Beam. I was told no dice.

Edit: If I sent you a PM, would you pass along the contact info to that rep? I still like DR and would gladly buy a minimum set if they would make a .055 Hi-Beam or Lo-Rider.

Sorry, I feel obliged to respond. Granted, the procedure may not be ideal, but the phone number is prominently displayed on the website, and if an online order is slow in coming, a phone call to check on it isn’t out of the question. In my case, I didn’t have to “pester” Skip; I phoned just once, to ask him if my guess at a choice of custom gauges would work (an inquiry that may not be all that uncommon when dealing with custom gauges), we had a very nice and helpful discussion, and he went ahead and processed my order immediately. So the process may not be as unreasonable as you suggest.

As a guy who likes 35-90 and has few options (but Rotos work just fine), if I had to do this I probably would not mess with it when I can get this done via SIT and not have to go to that trouble.

Daddario have a much larger variety of gauges available than what appear in their pre packed sets. From .175 to .020

I should mention that you do need to setup an account with them.
If you don't need financial terms it's really easy.
Once setup they'll tell you who your agent is.

Has anybody else tried octave4plus? I ordered strings in June and paid in advance; he said it'd be about two months. Every time I've inquired about the ETA (which was about once a month) I basically got a reply of "SOON". Is this guy that far behind?

Here's my update. I paid $130 in advance and I don't think I will ever see my strings, nor ever hear from this guy again. I got screwed.

I ended up getting the LaBella flats for the Gold Tone bass, and they sound very nice. Took a while to get them to install properly though - they need to be bent at the bridge BEFORE installation.

I ordered a set of custom Pyramid gold flats for my five-string G Gould 35" scale bass. The standard long scale set didn't quite fit. Ordering process and communication was great. It only took them a couple of days to get my order done but they did warn me that shipping would be slower than usual due to Covid. About two and a half weeks before they arrived in CA. I asked for the B sting in a gauge that was not listed as an option on the website and it was no problem to get them to make it. I would definitely order from Pyramid again and am thinking of trying their nickel rounds. If I remember correctly there was no additional charge for the custom order from Pyramid and I am pretty sure they will make whatever you request.

I asked for the B sting in a gauge that was not listed as an option on the website and it was no problem to get them to make it.

Could you share what the gauge is? (On the packet they only list 120, 124, 126, 130.) So that we have a better idea what is not an unreasonable custom gauge request to them.

I had them make me a .118 B string which is not listed. They also had to trim the silks on the ball end differently for my 35" scale bass since a few of the ones in the stock long-scale set sat on the bridge saddles and the silks from a couple of the strings on the peghead end sat on the nut so the lengths of the strings were adjusted as needed to fit. I sent the measurements Max requested when I emailed him plus some pictures that included a metric ruler so he could see exactly what was going on. Strings they made fit perfectly.

According to the catalog the long scale Pyramid flats come in gauges listed below, looking at the stock sets it appears there are more stock gauges available for round wound strings, the largest B in the stock sets is a .140. Best to email Max for info...
