CWB 20: Babes and Barbarians

He asked me to come back alone to talk about personal stuff before I go home to Florida and he seemed visibly relieved to know that my sister will be here in a few days. I'm not happy about this, but it's the hand we've all been dealt, so I will do what needs to be done.

And when you get a chance, ask your dad about that ball that went over the fence in 1972... He never gave it back.

edit: Actually back around 1978 in Valdosta, GA, at about 3:30am after a concert gig we had finished I found myself in a pasture picking shrooms out of bull pies....brahmas I believe they were...true story....damn they were good

hang in there Tat. Y'know I went through it with my Mom back in February-March, in Wyomissing/Reading. It was painful but it had to be what it had to be. It was helpful that I had my sisters around and involved as well. You know how to reach me if there's anything I can provide.

Or that's how I worked the song into Friday night's jam, came out of nowhere, or someplace deep down and hidden. They were playing D -C -G in 4/4 and that just popped out at the end. Guess it was what I was feeling. Strange because usually Thunder Gods have no feelings and certainly

So...

Her Jackie-ness is out getting some shopping tied up. At four we are headed over to the business owned by Feral's frontman Bob for a little party before tonight's gig.

We are playing a benefit for a charity called "Spirit of Christmas". This is the third year that we've played their benefit gigs. It's for a great cause and it's always super packed with people partying pretty hard.

Tomorrow morning we load up the dogs and gifts and head toward Richmond to spend the holiday with Jackie's parents. Of course the big storm is supposed to be hitting her about the same time. Perfect. We have a good snow vehicle (her Infinity FX35) with fresh rubber and I am comfortable driving in it, so no big deal.

I might not get a chance to check in until we are in Richmond.

Hmmm, mrs. BG's mother might be facing some serious health stuff suddenly. No retail details yet but a tough time to have something like this hanging over us (on top of other things that are hanging over us already - but at least those aren't health related, just general stress).

Mrs Thunder God is gonna have coal in her stocking unless I get the lard out of my *** and get moving on it. I asked for a list 2 weeks ago and din't get any requests. a friend of hers cued me in on something that she might like, so there will be a pit stop tomorrow it looks like. Then there is all the food to make etc. as this year it's at our house.

I usually do a a fresh (not cured) ham, rsweet and sour red cabbage, and scratch made brown gravy like Julia Child taught my mom who taught me how to make. That covers most of my portion of the stuff, maybe boil and sugar some red potatoes, cucumbers marinated in white vinegar, sugar and dill, petite peas in butter sauce. Smoked salmon with mustard sauce which is 5 equal parts

Brown Mustard
Dijon Mustard
Vinegar
Oil
Sugar

Last time I used olive oil, and the vinegar was 50/50 balsamic and red wine vinegar as I thought the balsamic might take over the recipe. I usually use Grey Poupon, but last time I used Kosciusko brown and a grainy Stone Ground style Dijon. I thought it was a tad thin, so I thickened it with a teaspoon or two of ground mustard powder. Then I put in some Coleman's powdered mustard till it had just the right kick. It was awesome with the salmon.

Oh, and I got a bag of peeled and deveined Gulf shrimp, pinks, 21/26 ct, Campeche Treasure label. Wild Caught, Product of Mexico. (Ocean Garden label is nice too). I won't eat any of the farmed raised EZ Peel raw or cooked Asian white shrimp they sell in the supermarket, for reasons you don't really want to know about. Just trust me on this, you get what you pay for.

I also make Xmas Eve dinner, but I keep that simple, pan seared filet or tenderloin of beef, asparagus, baked taters, maybe a couple of more sides, cranberry sauce or candied yams or something.

I'll do the red cabbage Saturday and the Cukes, as the cabbage is better cooked for a few days, and the cukes really need about 48 hours to soften up in the vinegar. So I will have plenty to do for sure.

I may brine the ham (in a cooler) as that is the traditional Finnish way and my wife likes that. Not because it's ham, because it's Finnish.

She makes the best pülla, Finnish Cardamom braided coffee bread, which is totally awesome, so I don't complain.

I'm hungry.

So..today I was told that I am good, but not good enough.

I answered an ad for a local band that is looking for a bass player. Their band leader asked me about how long I have been playing for, gear, schedule, etc. I give him the particulars and provide him with some links to "showcase" my ability. His response was this: You are REALLY good for someone who has only been playing for two years. You must either be a natural, or you have worked your tail off. However, we are looking for someone that is more seasoned with a more advanced skill set.

I know I shouldn't get frustrated about it..but his reply to me just nips at my craw.

It happens. There is always someone ahead of you and someone behind you. I've gotten a couple of turn-downs over the last year or so even though I knew my playing was good enough. Some of it is style too, both musical and otherwise. As long as there are enough calls for me to play with people I like, I'm good.
