I've already learned something, about washers. In fact the picture in that section shows my hub -- an ancient Sturmey Archer 3 speed, and it has the problem as described. The flanges are too thin. I was thinking about adding washers, and now my guess is confirmed.

Looks like I've got some reading to do. Thanks!

Got my commuter stolen last week ....:mad:


It's been a very hard cycling month of May for me , been "doored" , now this.
Well at least I have 6 other bikes to choose from :D
But only two of them are lockable outside.

I got the badest Kriptonite New-York there is , if someone is able to open this puppy , he's gonna earn it!

Sucks for your bike. What was it? I'll keep an eye open in Qc city.

On an unrelated note I'm a bit frustrated Sora now comes with proper shifting levers. I hate my darn thumb levers... (Yh, I know I've been saying this for the past 5 threads).

edit: How hard is it to change a groupset?

Isn't Sora 10 speed now as well? Campagnolo uses thumb shifters, just pretend it is Italian inspired.

It's 9 now, used to be 8 (what I have is 8).

It's not Italian inspired, it's stupid inspired. I can barely hit it from the drops and I have a lot of finger reach. It's a PITA.

I also need a new cycling computer. You guys have recommendation for the budget conscious? Powertap would be cool and all but it's a bit over my budget :p

Sans computer is the best way to ride IMO, it really is quite distracting. Just run some tracking app if you have a smartphone and must know.

Nothing in particular, I've been thinking about giving friel's bible and chance and see how far it can take me.

At the moment I'm close to zero, bad cardio, no endurance, etc. I've not had the chance to ride this summer at all.

The trainer I bought is a POS, but I'll probably bring it to my apt. next time I'm at my parent's.

I did the same sort of thing when I was first getting really into it, now I am a bit of a retro grouch. Are you thinking about racing? I don't train, I ride my bike. As Merckx said, "Ride lots."

I could go into a rant of sorts, but it's my bedtime. Try a month or so without a computer, and trainers are absolute hell. Just ride and enjoy yourself. Start slow and build up. Friel's book assumes a pretty good amount of experience, and is ridiculously complex for just punters like me. If/when I start moving up the Cats, I will give it a more thorough look, but it is really unnecessary at this point for me.

YMMV, but it is just better all around to ride with sort of nebulous goals in place at the beginning. Give it time.

From what I heard , They fill up containers of stolen stuff and send it overseas.

BUT if .... :
it's an hybrid , black , electric taped , tried very much to make it as ugly and un-likable as possible , with a Nexus 8 with drum brake in the back and a Sturmey-Archer drum brake front hub.
Full fender.
Bagage rack

Was my winter steed.

Certainly seems like the way to go. However, I'll ride a few weeks to get back into it before I make any bike related purchases I think. I'm so out of shape right now it doesn't really matter what my power outputs or speed is as long as I get my potato pumping good.

Oh, and I'll be mountain biking next week. I'll be working from my parent's place. :hyper:

On a lighter note:

I'm a very big fan of Brooks product , all my bikes have Brooks saddles , I use one of their bag , leather road bar tape etc...

I suscribed to be a beta tester of their new Invalid Link Removed and just received one.
Looks amazing , a little on the heavy side like all their saddles but looks comfy.

Now the question is: on wich bike will I put it !!!!
first feeling ; on the MTB since it's rubber , more mud resistant than leather.

That's what I do, I suppose I might want a computer to look at if I was seriously race training, but I'm not, I just want to know how well I did at the end of my ride. Strava is what I've used so far this season as a cycling app.

Spent a few hours this evening at the neighborhood collective where I could finally get this in the stand. It's a gen 1 Salsa Fargo that I'm building up as my touring/townie/gravel/trail/winter/do-anything bike. Everything is used except for the chain, cables, b17, the bb7's and the rubber ([Invalid or Expired Link Removed].) I still need to swap the tiagra (double) FD from the parts bin out for a NOS 105 (triple) that I just swiped off of the 'bay, but other than that it's just time to dial in the cockpit, trim some shifter housing and tape up the bars.

Deore Cranks 44-32-22
Sram cassette 11-34
Tiagra 3x9 Brifters
32h XT hubs on DT TK540 rims
Avid bb7 road disc brake set
Salsa Woodchipper dirt drop bar

Total cost is still under $1k. I'm feeling pretty good about it (and saving up for a tubus rack!)
