Dad band names

I’ll be the party pooper here. No problem.

This thread simply isn’t funny. At all. Shame on the moderators for turning a blind eye.

Why is that? On the face of it, it is a shallow pass at good natured laughing at ourselves. OK as far as that goes. But, past that, it falls unabashedly within the hate culture that we are currently struggling with. “Dad” band’s? What does that mean ? That somehow older players are out of their space to be playing pop music? Based on age? Or siring status? I call BS on that. Substitute skin pigment, and we’d be having a WHOLE different discussion. Or gender. Or lifestyle. It’s simply NOT funny to poke fun at human beings for some aspect of their circumstances.

Age discrimination is a very real deal. I’m at the end of my straight job career and living in a town with a very active defense contractor. Said contractor posted a position recently in an area that I specifically researched for a doctorate, worked in for multiple decades, wrote hundreds of articles and hold dozens of patents in. I applied. Never even got a response. And I know it’s because a computer rejected my resume based on date of graduation, and that a human being never saw it.

I would also add that I admit to being of the Woodstock generation. That event didn’t make light of older players. Mixing older and younger players on the gig is healthy and part of passing the baton. I vastly prefer playing in bands with large age ranges.

We should reject a culture which diminishes categories of individuals based on their circumstances. That’s a hate culture. It doesn’t belong in our music or on this forum.

Find your amusement elsewhere; such as making light of your own circumstances. That’s a lot better humor.

Lighten up Francis.

I’m 65, and was at the end of my “straight job” career at age 60. Yes, age discrimination does exist. My recruiter told me off the record my age was indeed a factor keeping me from a new job. I do feel your pain. I found that when a 30-something manager asks you “where do you see yourself in ten years”, the correct answer is not “retired”, or “alive, hopefully”.

But that’s not what this thread is about. We ARE poking fun at ourselves. I spent my 40’s in a cover band with my high school band mates. We called ourselves the Midlife Crisis Band. The name was a joke but the music was seriously good. We still text each other with alternate band names.

I think you are reading far more into this thread than is intended. If you find the thread offensive, don’t read it.

First, I don’t care for being told to “lighten up.”

Second, do you disagree that if you made a similar thread about skin pigment, that there would be a problem? How do you justify double standards?

In fact, I’m perfectly “lightened up.” Way past caring what anyone else thinks about what I do or don’t do. Makes recognizing BS a whole lot easier.

Great comedy makes life. But, great comedy absolutely NEVER occurs at someone else’s expense.

Being inclusive is part of our art form. I just think it’s more important to lead with that example rather than get some cheap jollies at someone else’s expense. I’m far from offended. I’m just saying it’s bad practice. Period.

Not sorry for peeing in your Post Toasties.

I know I shouldn't take the bait...

Clearly a take on the ever present "dad jokes" that has been a societal norm for quite some time. I don't see anywhere in the 59 pages where fun has been made at anyone else's expense, or where a person's age was specifically targeted. I don't recall dad being equated to a specific age group either.

To tie anything quoted in this thread with racism, or any other hate based activity, is far reaching.

There are clearly guidelines by which most adhere to on this foum... I would imagine if after over 1 year of posts, and 59 pages, the mods thought this to be crossing any line it would have been closed long ago.

It must have checked some boxes on your moral barometer otherwise you wouldn't have posted. Suggesting the mods close this thread because of your interpretation is akin to asking to close a thread talking about p-basses with tort guards because you absolutely hate them.

At the end of the day this is a public forum with many differing ideas and opinions such as yours. And, as expected, others will chime in with theirs.

If guilty of anything, it might be jokes that just aren't very funny; for non-bigoted reasons.

First, “societal norms” does not always equal OK. All kinds of “isms” have been societal norms at one time or another. Doesn’t make them ok.

Second, I have contacted no mods. I am simply appealing to my bass brothers and sisters to think carefully about humor at others’ expense. I like humor as much as the next player. Making fun of some other group just usually isn’t funny.

Third, the basis of this one is with no question age related. I remember being 18 once, and our byline was that you couldn’t trust anyone over the age of 30. The Nixon years, as it happens. So, I understand “generation gaps.”

I would just point out that Jamerson was a Dad, when he was laying down all those wonderful lines. So, smile when you say that (as the saying goes).

I’m a member of the Woodstock generation too. I am comfortable being a dad and doing typical dad stuff. It does not discriminate against me when someone points that out. I own it.

My band’s name is Vintage Winds, which I cheerfully inform people stands For Old Farts. It’s a surf and blues band, both dated genres.

The other band I play in is Life in the Past Lane, and all players except the drummer are 60+ and retired. None of us are sensitive about that. It’s all covers, all oldies.

My delightful younger daughter gave me a book of dad jokes for my 69th birthday this summer. I got a chuckle out of some of them.

Age discrimination in the workplace is quite real, and some of my friends have experienced it. I worked in higher ed for 39 years, and in that workplace age is often an asset because of the experience and expertise that come with it. Good choice on my part, I guess. But for a player in a hobby or weekend band (which most TB members are) I have difficulty thinking it’s a problem in that endeavor. Good bands often have a lot of grey hair these days.

This is the TB "I'll be here all week" band joke thread. More of a joke band thread, I think.

I've posted a lot here and make no apologies. I own all my replies. Hey, I even live some of them. And, I laugh at others. Some are even good band names.

Gotta laugh or we'll all be cryin':roflmao:.:crying:

As far as age discrimination, that's way over there, not here.

I feel for ya bro, really. Nobody wants to hire grandpa.:bored:

I suggest maybe start doing some consulting, more dependent on your skills rather than a paycheck.

Good luck!

I would hope that someone recruiting someone of age 60 would be able to ask a more sensible question...

WHOLE lot of nastiness for a supposed humor section. My points were clear enough. If you feel it necessary to launch personal slags, that’s pretty pitiful. Missed the part where I insulted anyone. Clearly some here need to hurl insults to feel fulfilled. And, here I was thinking this was about bass playing...

Indeed. Here is where you started.

Insulting the moderators.

Claiming that all that have participated here are part of some kind of hate culture.

Glass houses.
