So my wife is a big Dallas Cowboys fan and we are going to Dallas for a game this weekend. Where are good places to see cover bands in the area? I'm staying not far from the airport, but driving a little is OK. I am mostly interested in 90's-current county covers or 80' etc covers, but open to any suggestions for this Friday and Saturday. TIA

Unfortunately, near the airport isn’t a great location for the DFW live music scene, but you can get where you’d need to in 20 minutes if traffic isn’t bad.

The Dallas Observer is the alternative newspaper in town, it normally has good live music listings but I checked and the content this weekend is rather sparse.

Here is a (perhaps sponsored) listing of good live music venues. It seems reasonable based on my experience, you can check with any of these individually.

There are isolated live music venues all over the ‘plex, but the concentrations tend to be on Lower and Lowest Greenville (that’s the name of a street, these are the districts on it nearest downtown) and Deep Ellum which is a neighborhood just east of downtown that transitioned into a very vibrant live music scene in the 90s, then declined, and may be rising again now.

A great venue not listed above is the Kessler Theater in Oak Cliff.

If you’re into jazz I can personally vouch for this guy. He’s a friend and played with Maynard Ferguson at the end of Maynard’s career.

I visited Fort Worth a few times while working on TEXRail. You could take TEXRail from DFW into Fort Worth. The Kimball Art Museum and Modern Art Museum are worth visiting if you are into architecture.

My work trip usually involved stopping in Grapevine for BBQ at AJ's on Main... but that's because I had to stop there for meetings. There's good food all over.

If you're staying on the north side of the airport you can sometimes get lucky in Grapevine at some of the clubs on Main St. in their old town area.

If it's country covers you want, just go to the Fort Worth Stockyards. There are more clubs, country cover bands, and potential fist fights there than you can shake a stick at. Have fun.

Thanks for all the suggestions! I should have also asked where to go eat...
What city? We can definitely give you an opinionated list.

edited to clarify... I know you're staying by the airport, but if you go to Dallas for music then Fort Worth food suggestions wouldn't be realistic since they're probably an hour apart or more.

Fort Worth has tons of great options. Some good choices off Magnolia on the Near South Side close to downtown. Lili's Bistro, Heim BBQ, Nonna Tara, Cane Rosso (Dallas based pizza chain but good with non-standard ingredients).

Still on the south side... Bearded Lady, Pouring Glory, Panther City BBQ. Just about any taco truck parked on South Hemphill between W Rosedale and W Seminary plus El Mil tacos or Juanita's Taqueria (both on South Hemphill as well).

Downtown has Waters, Little Red Wasp, Rita (but I liked it better before they changed owners), Del Frisco's Double Eagle (but it's super expensive).

I'm a cheap date so I'll generally steer you towards less expensive and more casual, but there are a few spendy ones listed above. The secret to taco places is to find that sweet spot between 2.5 and 3.5 stars. Too low and they're just one bad inspection away from closing... too high and they've changed the menu to appease the wrong people. YMMV
