DAMN!!

You guys are calloused. Yes he is a murderer. Not disputing that, but the guy is INSANE. If he is insane he cannot be held accountable for his actions. From time to time I work with mentally disabled teenagers and let me tell you they cannot be reasoned with. You can tell them 100 times to stop doing a certain behaviour and give very good reasons why. They still do it. Thats because their brain is not normal. Same with this guy. The State should not kill somebody because if are insane. They should be incarcerated to protect society. This individual also did a great deal of harm to himself and really the prison that let that happen should be held accountable. The guy has a history of doing such things and they basically just let him harm himself. Where is their accountability? Someone should get fired over this IMO.

No doubt an unpopular opinion among you OT people but so be it.

Shall we assign this guy a personal, 24 hour a day guard to keep him from hurting himself? Better yet, should he be restrained 24 hours a day to keep him from hurting himself? Personally, I'd rather be dead......

You can't keep nut jobs from hurting themselves. No one needs to lose this job over this incident.

Not calloused, just a realist.

Agreed, but some people just need to be dead. This guy is a great example.

Let's assume that the shrinks decide that this guy, if properly medicated, is "sane" enough to be released into the public. Would you want him living next door to you?

I wouldn't have a problem, he can't hurt anyone because he can't SEE anyone. There's not going to be a blind mass murderer if he "forgets to take his meds".

This man speaks the truth.

Excuse the pun, but that's pretty short-sighted........

My ex-wife was pretty naive about these sorts of things, too. While she was studying for her doctorate, she took a job counseling at a residential drug rehab facility. During a private session, she got beat so bad that she was in the hospital for a week.

The man that beat her was 5'3", maybe 110 lbs, 71 years old, and missing one hand. He got in one lucky shot, and that's all he needed to get the upper hand.

Never underestimate the handicapped, especially the crazy ones.

Agreed. Some people need to be dead. But that does not mean that the government or anybody should actually do it. If I decided my drummer needed to have his drumstick stuck somewhere the sun never shines because he refuses to play a certain beat, I won't call the police or the district attorney, ordering them to do it, just because I think it needs to be done?

A justice system, any justice system is WRONG if it acts from the rule "eye for an eye, tooth for a tooth". If you're a burglar, you've stolen a tv, the police doesn't go to your house to take away the tv, do they?

There's a huge difference between something that needs to be done and actually doing it. It's called thinking.

Let's assume that the shrinks decide that this guy, if properly medicated, is "sane" enough to be released into the public. Would you want him living next door to you?
I agree that murderers and other heavy criminals should never walk the streets again. In a good justice system, he will never live next door to you, because he will spend the rest of his days in prison. The best thing possible for this guy is he'll move to a cell with less heavy security.

I understand your point, but this guy is an extreme. Now that he's completely blind, maybe his case can be changed, but you can't just strap him in a chair for the rest of his days to "protect him from himself". I don't think anyone should get fired, as the goal of detention is to protect others from those who are incarcerated. There is little you can do to prevent him from self-inflicted actions. If he ripped his eye off and ate it within two minutes, who is responsible, exactly?

And what good might that solve? This guy firstly killed innocent members of society, and then purposely inflicted this injury upon himself. You can't blame anyone else but him for his injury.

Also, this guy is not going to benefit from being mollycoddled, because at the end of the day like someone else has said you can't just put him in a box or tie him to a chair in the hope it might 'protect him'.

The difference between the example you give of mentally disabled people and this guy is that you can make the safe assumption that this guy was aware of what he did to get him put into prison and plucking his own eye out was probably pre-meditated.

I work with mentally disabled people for a living, and think this guy should be dead.

Tell that accountability crap to the families of the people he not only murdered, but destroyed.

I'm sorry, but I don't see a difference. If someone doesn't understand why something is wrong then there is nothing to stop them doing it, whether it be stealing sweets or killing people. He may be aware of what he did to get into prison (or not), but he obviously didn't/doesn't know that it is wrong, or he wouldn't have done it in the first place. That is the thing with disabled people - they don't think or act rationally, therefore you can't treat them in the same way as someone who has the capabilities to think and act rationally. And I highly doubt that pulling his eye out was planned.

It is the duty of the State to protect individuals from themselves. Remember back when OJ was on trail for the first time? He went to court with no tie (or shoelaces) for the first while because at the beginning of their prison term inmates are under suicide watch. Again the State has a duty to protect individuals under its care. This is the same type of situation with this insane person.

Yes, this person should've been under physical restraint until such time as a suitable drug could be used to help with his situation.

From time to time the human brain might develop a chemical imbalance. This imbalance MAY essentially render the individual insane. This is no fault of the individual. It just happens.

That's like saying some old man who has alzheimer's who forgets to turn the stove off and unintentionally burns down the house (killing the other occupants) should be executed by the State.

Quite a lack of compassion in my opinion.

These matters are not simply "black and white" as some of you seem to think. They are shades of gray.

Eye don't get the reference.

A few years ago I subbed for a cover band that did that song. There's also a Tom Petty reference from GoldenBoy

Back on topic. I think there's always going to be a question of whether you execute mentally disturbed individuals even when their crimes are so horrific. Personally I don't care either way in this instance.
