The MBD2 is designed for a wide range of basses. If you don’t get enough gain then that’s what the 20dB switch is for.
Think of it like changing gears. Down is 1st gear and up is 2nd gear.

Hitting the MBD-2 with a heavy distortion is 11th gear.
I have to admit that’s why I love my mbd1…I set it so it’s like a dark deep transparent overdrive that will just clank off I dig in… when my band tunes to drop C (although I go C standard) it just adds to the tracks that need the heavy without losing it in a wall of distortion/ crunch.
The MBD, as always, just absolutely slayed at practice. Constantly reminds me of why it is such a classic bass pedal. Sits in a mix like 6 pounds of cheesecake in your guts.

Just snagged an early run plain black enclosure MBD-1 (#5 to be exact) and went down the Talkbass nostalgia hole— found some pics of my OG MBD & long gone 4003 while digging through the threads here.
Pretty sure the reason I flipped my last two MBDs is because my amp situation at the time was less than ideal. Excited to hear how this one sounds with my current setup.
Been using my GOOD ENOUGH coffee mug almost every day for 4 years now.. glad to be back on the Damnation train baybeeee

Decided to throw some silver Davies knobs on the MBD-1, I think it’s a great look.
Also popped the lid on it to adjust the boost but the previous owner had it set to full on— was wondering why it sounded so good! Leaving it that way. If memory serves me correct, I don’t think I adjusted the internal trim on the ones I owned previously.

I'm curious about the timeline of the MBD-1, and it's trimpots.
I've read that it was initially a bias trim for the clean, then an input gain trim added afterwards.
Yet, there's the earliest ones, like yours @cataract , that has a boost trim, but no bias trim.
Based on what I've seen, and read.
It goes only boost trim, only bias trim, then both.

On the right side of that board is a socketed FET and a trimpot to bias it properly.
