Agreed. I wish somebody made a demo of MBD3 with low gain settings...
I knocked out this quick and dirty clip for you.
Signal: Nordy Acinonyx v2 Middle + Bridge pickups > Nordy Starlifter (bypasssed but it still has control over level/gain) > MBD3 > Night Owl Edison > DSM OCSD
Simple riff on the A string (I didn't tune) with some palm mute. Bongo hits indicate setting change.
1. MBD3 Bypassed
2. MBD3 Engaged (no Boost)
3 MBD3 Engaged (with boost)
I played the riff 3 times (could've used a looper) then normalized the three audio clips to minimize any bias based on levels. I found that it mostly brought the lows up and compressed the sound a bit. Included is a photo of my settings. I minimized the Blend.

I spent the rest of the night turning knobs using the same basic setup with an F Bass with more powerful pickups, and there’s some extra hair that popped out with that bass using the same Drive & Boost. I was tempted to use it for the clip but it’s an uncommon bass and I didn’t want to record with something exotic (like Mr. Excane has done). The Acinonyx isn’t terribly common but I felt like the fundamental sound wasn’t a distraction. That said YMMV depending on what you feed into the pedal.
I get that.
I can see that the drive knob is set just before noon...so it can be lowered/decreased. So there is some leverage for basses with hotter signal...
There is. Just be aware that at lower Drive settings you’re almost forced to use a lower Boost setting to keep the levels reasonably close. Low Drive with a high Boost setting will definitely yield a more dramatic volume increase when Boost is engaged. If that’s the effect you’re going for then of course you can have at it![]()
Sounds great like I knew it would. Is it enough if a change to make me sell my MBD 2, no my pedal can do the same, but It's still a great pedal and a wise choice...I knocked out this quick and dirty clip for you.

Thank you for this, you helped sell another MBD
Finally settled on a small board combo that works well for me. Still playing around with MBD3 settings, but several lower gain setting are working very well! Happy MBD3 buyer! : )View attachment 5219115
I’ve owned all three versions…these pedals do low gain equally as good as high gain, ime. Those settings aren’t far from where I often find myself.
