Danelectro Owners Club

I've solved the intonation issues with my Longhorn. The saddle needed to go back further than possible as it was. The screw is no longer holding the saddle to the bridge-plate, but I don't think that will be an issue. The saddle was too high at the back, to be able to fit under the strings, so I've filed groves where the strings made an imprint, so it tapers down at the back. It was nearly perfect then, except the G was sharp, so I filed about 1.5 mm there (which looks much rougher in the photo) and it's spot on now too.

Definitely worth the effort and made a big difference.

Hello guys !

I would like to buy a Dano Longhorn (and join the club when I get it!) and was wondering if the new longhorns were chinese or korean made ? Cauz I found an old thread (january 2012) saying that the production of Danos was getting back in Korea, just like the 90s ones.

Also, I was looking on Amazon to buy one: http://www.amazon.com/Danelectro-Lo...&qid=1358285705&sr=8-1&keywords=longhorn+bass
Is the color on the picture is the good one or it looks more like the 90s ones ?

(the old color I'm talking about. It seems to look whiter on the center.)

Thanks ! :hyper:

That does look lighter in the center . The most recent batch were Korean made but they look very similar to the last batch of Chinese basses . Both have the truss rod cover like the one you pictured .

The earlier re-issue LHorns adjust at the heel of the neck , the originals were steel reinforced , but not adjustable .

I have a first generation re-issue . Unfortunately I don't have a brand new one so I can't compare the build or feel . As far as features go the only big difference would be the truss rod adjusting at the headstock rather than the heel of the neck . With the older one's you have to take the neck off to get at the truss rod . The tone part of the stacked knobs are a different shape .

Other than that they should be similar . Two stacked knobs for tone/ volume . Traditional tuners and bridge . Two lipstick pickups , taped sides , maple neck , rosewood fingerboard , aluminum nut , hardwood frame , Masonite top and back , taped sides ... traditional Dano style build and appointments .

Some of the earlier Korean models had the " Pro" designation and were equipped with an adjustable bridge and better tuners .

The current Longhorns are Korean, but check with the seller first. I found a few still had Chinese stock. The finish on the Chinese is matte, where the Korean ones are gloss, but otherwise the same.

The reports on the Chinese ones vary widely. Not sure if there were qc problems, if it's just a bias against the Chinese or guys who expect too much from a Dano?

Yes, you can upgrade the tuners and bridge. The bridge will change the sound, with the metal saddles. Not necessarily better or worse, but different. Did you see my post above, about modifying the bridge? Simple to do. The tuners on mine work well so far. The only thing I don't like, are the small holes through the posts.

I installed Shaller Keys which I have now seen made by everyone on everything now days. That takes care of the string slot problem. Rondo has them in black chrome or gold for $11 or less. I've had the Asian copies on all my Rogue basses for years and never had a problem with them. It means that you must drill out the peg holes, but this is a very worthy improvement.

I am not interested in numbers since I am not a fan of the "club thing". I post just to confirm my love for Danelectro and Danelectro style basses. I own a korean first reissue '58 Longhorn Pro in black, a Turquoise Jerry Jones Neptune Longhorn and I am working to secure a Dynelectron, italian clones from the '60s-'70s. All are stock. Also own and play a Reverend Rumblefish which has some dues to the Danos.

I play the longhorns really often, even if I own other basses (usual suspects). Here a link to youtube where you can see some Danelectro on the most recent video of my band. Song is in italian, but in the second half you can see some lipstick action (with help from the guitar player too with a chinese made DC guitar) Hope you find this funny.

I used to have a turquoise JJ Longhorn also! Incredible bass! I bought it in 1993 I believe because of a back injury, because I appreciated its light weight. It became my favorite until I sold it about 4 years ago. Dumb mistake! Now I have a Blackburst Dano longhorn which is now my favorite! The turquoise JJ got a lot of attention and became a fan of many over the years.

I've always liked these and wanted one, but never actually looked for one to buy. Then last Thursday a guy I know PM'ed me on FB with some gear he wanted shed of, including a Dano Longhorn. So I went down Friday and picked her up for $250 with hardshell case. Don't know that much about them, but from the Invalid Link Removed site, I gather this is a BlackBurst 58 Longhorn Pro, made in Korea circa 1998-2001. She's a real beauty in like new condition. Plays like a dream and sounds great! And so light weight. I call her Natalie.

I was thinking I'd make a new pickguard for her until I saw how some are putting pics under the clear one.

I can haz number?
