I just put EBCF 45-105 on my short horn Dano. The trick was to pre-bend the ends to minimize stress when winding on the small tuning posts.
Late 90’s early 00’s , looks like a Shinko. Some say those first reissues were the best made ones.
How can you tell when it was made? It's pretty basic it doesn't have a truss rod adjustment or the upgraded machine heads. But it plays well.
Aren’t the truss rod nuts buried in the neck pocket like the short horns?
You have to remove the neck to get to the truss rods , but they’re certainly there. I’ve found those early Longhorns to be incredibly stable , in the twenty four years I’ve had mine I’ve only adjusted them twice.
The early reissues did not have serial numbers so they’re difficult to date, butthe features identify it as an early reissue. They slightly changed when production moved to China.

What?? really?? lol well that's a brilliant place for it? So you have to take off the neck to adjust them?? that is pretty silly.. - oh well i still love my long horn... oh I have Baritone (tuned B to B) Longhorn six string too.
Plenty of guitars have the truss rod nut at the heel rather than the headstock. Sure, it's a PITA, but you'll rarely need to do it, and it's actually not hard.
Well, my short horn went from tapes to EBCF. So, had to guess how much to relax the truss rod. Guessed wrong and over did it. Now have to loosen a set of fragile strings and try again. Praying I don't snap the E.
Love that color. Here's mine, same time period of production. The guy I bought it from used swears that it's a '98 from the original reissue run. The bridge on your's looks different, the adjustment? in the center of the bridge looks a bit different but that may just be the angle of the photo.
So, enlighten me on the 59DC bass. The long scale one.
I had a U2 guitar from the first batch of reissues, really liked it. I’ve always wanted a Longhorn bass, missed the opportunity to pick up one a while back. So I’ve kinda been thinking about them lately and stumbled on a few videos for the DC that seemed interesting.
From what it looks like, older ones have an unpainted headstock, wood bridge saddle and no 3-way switch. The newer ones seem to have adjustable bridges, matching headstocks and a pickup selector switch. That correct? Opinions or advantages of one vs the other?
As for strings, can these handle any normal strings, with the small tuners, or are my string choices limited? I was thinking flats or maybe tapewounds would be fun.

My April 1999 short horn (long scale) had La Bella 750T white tapes. They fit fine. I just found them too floppy. I love Ernie Ball Cobalt Flats (45-105), but was advised to bend the silks by hand before wrapping them around the tuning posts. That worked and I didn’t snap the E string. With both strings, the silks where on the posts and not the strings. The G string was close but still 1/2” or so away.
P.S. mine fits your description of unpainted headstock, rosewood saddle, and no switch.
I have a long-scale DC bass. It has a wood-saddle bridge. It takes "normal" long-scale strings.
It's a great bass. The only thing I don't like about it is that it's long-scale. I prefer short-scale. I still play it sometimes, in rotation with my other Danelectro basses, because it sounds and plays great.

Is there much difference in tone between the DC and a Longhorn? Relative pickup placement and scale length would have to account for something.
