When he came to give his masterclass he had brought a kind of acoustic bass/upright hybrid, he didn't talk about it but I saw the name "Marco" written on it, and know he was going to use it for a concert later that day. It sounded pretty amazing.

Thank you, Matteo. The album I suggested featured a different luthier made instrument that Dario has already sold, but I can confirm that, yes, he had a "Marco" brand bass when you saw his clinic last week (in Belgium). I think those basses are made in Spain. NYC bassist Tarus Mateen also plays that kind of bass and it does sound great. I'll have to look into it myself!

Hi Marco,
Is it true that Dario has gotten rid of his Marcustico? What's his main instrument for straight up jazz gigs nowadays?

I love Dario, but I’ve been wondering what happened to his burst 66 ....this bass, or the amp, just does not have the same tone imo. :)

some friends told me that Dario's 1966 jazz bass was recently sold, but i don't know it for sure. In this period of his artistic career he is more oriented towards a hollowbody instrument, with sound characteristics closer to the double bass. I personally think that his musicianship and phrasing is best expressed with the clarity of an electric bass, but Dario was born and still remains a jazz player and his tone research is strictly connected to this genre

I just texted Dario, and yes, he sold his 1966 Fender Jazz last December, sigh! He still has a decent 80s Squier for whenever he needs that fretted Jazz vibe though. Truth is that he’ll still be the #1 electric jazz bass player in the world, no matter what instrument happens to be in his hands.

yes, i'm sorry too, yes, that 80's Squier is decent, but i liked his 66, not the best i have played in terms of tone, but by being quite open it was giving back every nuance that were coming from Dario's hands, even rough at times, but very jazz in my opinion. Yes, there are great bass players out here, but Dario is in his own league... inarrivabile ! :)
