Darkglass alpha omega ultra

figured this needed a dedicated thread. The original alpha omega has been my main dirt pedal since it came out. Having owned the b7k ultra I wasn’t particularly that excited about an A/O ultra. But Darkglass being Darkglass appears to have taken this one to another level. Congrats to Doug and everyone at Darkglass Electronics. You have earned my money yet again.

Small gripe... I want this pedal. I bought a b7k ultra and was actually tempted by the alpha omega, because it sounded like the distortions were more pleasing, to my ear at least. And I almost forked over the 300+ euros for it.

Now here comes an upgrade. Which I may purchase. But I’m beginning to feel like I’m a fan of the “apple” of effects pedals. I buy a new pedal, it’s “obsolete” in a few months. And they’re not what you would call inexpensive.

Small gripe. And the products are tremendous.

Hah! It’s funny you mention this because the same issue was brought up on ILF.

Version 2 or 3 come out so fast for pedals now that it does feel like we are in the Apple era of effects.

I don’t think it’s anything anyone does to make a quick buck or hurt the consumer like Apple does however by withholding features. I think the pedal geeks are just constantly tweaking things and trying to improve what they’ve made.

For me, I just decide what I need/want in a pedal. If it doesn’t have the features I want, I don’t buy.

The B7K is all I wanted and needed out of that type of sound, so I have that as opposed to having the Ultra (and I’ve had both). I am not interested in the version 2 because v1 takes care of my needs.

It does become frustrating though occasionally. Doug is a great guy however and I support his business growth and am happy for him.

I held off on the AO as well because I knew it’d most likely get a new release if it followed similar trends as the previous Pedals.

I’m in Helsinki so I may just go and visit them. Give them a piece of my mind!!

if you don't need the extra features don't get them, it's that simple man. None of their pedals are obsolete at all just different sizes and features.

Also has anyone noticed that the distortion switch can be assigned in the Darkglass suite to change between the two distortions?!?!?

Hasn't it been less than a year since the first AO came out? And then a few months later they came out with the mini version and now we're already getting an Ultra?

Considering Darkglass has established a small/medium/large version with the BxK and VMT, it is not hard to see that the AO would follow suit.

There is a TB thread on the AO announcement, which was started January of 2017. The small Omicron was announced in the TB news on Sept 17. This ultra is not officially out, but let's call it Jan/Feb of 18.

I have no issue with their product release schedule.

I concur, except I would say this is a "big gripe" because I'm sure that in the development phase of this pedal they knew they would come out with three versions and most likely people would buy all three. IMO, this is kinda slimy business wise, but then again I'm not a DG fanboy so what do I know.

I wouldn’t call their business model “kinda slimy” at all. Are we expecting them to sit on the same pedal models from now until some year determined OK for them to release something new and innovative?
If you’ve got the money (and I’m sure some of us do), you have the option of buying a brand new piece of Darkglass.. and if you don’t have the money, there’s still absolutely nothing at all wrong with the Darkglass you already own.
I just picked up a B7KU fairly recently, and I plan on using it for a while.. I’m glad Doug & Co. are still pushing things forward, though I wish they’d use basses other than Dingwalls for their demos :smug:

Fair enough argument, and perhaps slimy was a bit harsh. I'm just sick of these companies constantly "improving" the circuit every few months because despite what you say above, I do believe it sets up in people's minds that their old ones are just not quite good enough, even though as you rightly say, they are. It just smacks of slightly underhanded business practices to me. I'm not saying don't introduce new pedals. I'm just saying that these things could be done a little better. Like perhaps a whole new pedal with a different name? That, to me, would be a little more kind to the consumer, even if the end pedal is the same as this one.
