DarkStar American Precision Bass

I never heard the sound of Darkstars. Could you post some clips or point me to a specific song where you're sure a darkstar was used?

Very nice bass, really nice.
Here are some clips of the Lakland Decade, which (as you'll see) has 2 DarkStar pickups.

I've played a Skyline Glaub with a DS, and the tone is wonderful. I'll definitely own a DS'd bass in the future.

Oh MAN!! Thank you, this was a revelation!

The fat warm lows, the definition, the sweet crisp mids and highs...
The fingerstyle sound with both pups on!!!!!

Damn you, my soul will be restless until I own a bass with darkstars...

Those Lakland clips are nice, but I was kind of hoping they had a P with a Dark Star on it. I can't tell if the increased highs and lows was a function of the pickup or the placement. I have another clip of a P with Dark Stars that Rodent sent me, and it sounds great, but I'd love to hear someone with a regular P and a Dark Star P record some A/B stuff . As it stands, I like what I hear out of the Dark Star, but I'm not sure if it improves the tone enough for me to want to take the plunge on a $200 pickup when I can buy P pickups all day long for cheap.

It's a combination that works mighty well. Nice bass!!!

... You have a very cool bass there ... but please be advised ...
the use of Dark Star pickups can become an addiction!
:smug: ... Kinda like those famous potato chips ... you want more than one!

That is one beautiful looking bass! I would love to hear it :hyper:

Wow. I thought I would never say that, but that's a stunning looking P bass!
The pickups really adds to the retro vibe,
and look like they can take care of business and then more.

That is just beautiful, David.
Nice job!

Reversed P adds more girth to the D and G strings, not necessarily low end. It changes the phase in which those strings are amplified is the best way to put it, which means they would be even further behind the attack of the note in which you played.

I much prefer the standard P placement, but my ears are just used to that sound. I never could get used to the Ibanez I used to play which had a reversed P. Every time I pick up the regular P I feel much more at home..

To the OP:

What is that ring around the Darkstar. Was there a reason you needed the ring in place? I'm curious because I have been contemplating Darkstars for a while now.

i made that from a scrap piece of plastic ...
it's to cover the pickup adjustment screw holes in the original pickguard .

not a difficult thing , but i think it looks good ... :D
