DarkStar American Precision Bass

i decided to try reversing the way i had the pickup mounted ...
with the poles now pointed toward the neck , instead of the bridge .

it was an easy operation ...

i was very happy with mine also , but you know ,
with the pole towards the neck , it just seems to have even more " thump "...
a P-Bass on steroids indeed !!

I might just have to give it a try. It's not real hard to do, and it's reversible. Thanks for the info.

FWIW, I compared my DSP to a friend's refin 1960 P (stock) with the same strings and preferred the Dark Star to the "real thing." The Dark Star just seemed to have more dynamic range and clarity/punch. The only area in which the '60 held a slight edge was in having a fuller bottom end. Perhaps rotating the pickup might improve the sound even more!

... i know my bass has more bottom end growl ,
while still retaining the punch that i've come to expect ...
this is by far my favorite bass .

John Stirratt ,bass player for Wilco, has a US Lakland Glaub with a DarkStar. From the pictures I've seen it looks like he has it reversed, bigger poles toward neck (if that's reversed). I remember reading where he met Fred Hammon and told him his pickups changed his life. (bass playing life I imagine).It sounded great when I saw them live.

FWIW, I turned the pickup around on my DSP so they were closer to the neck. I'm still not certain which way I like better -- with the poles closer to the neck there definitely is a little more substantial low end that I love, yet it came at the cost of a touch of treble bite. Exactly what you would expect, I guess.
