How do you guys like the single darkstar pup? I have a custom built neck through V that I'm refinishing in a cherry stain, and I'm wondering if the darkstar will have some growl too it.
I'm not a fan of the Darkstars looks but it looks pretty nice on that bass! I dig! I can actually see myself playing one!

I have several personal basses with a single DS, and no basses with two DS's ... I've never been in the position of hunting for the blend knob due to needing more tone.

Your bass is awesome! Thats pretty much the P bass I want right now, Black/Maple/Black Pearl (or abalone). The pickup and bridge cover just add to it!

The DS is not as wide as a P-Bass pickup with so you're best off cutting a new guard. When I did mine, I got an anno-gold blank from Warmoth. A single layer of gold film over a thick 1 layer black guard. Nice material! Maybe a scootch thinner than a traditional 3 layer guard. My luthier did the trace and cut the guard from scratch at about $25...
Your other option is a trim ring to cover the remaining holes from the P. For me the issue with that was that it doesn't provide a lot of clearance from the top of the pickup to the strings. The DS is super strong and it needs a bit of clearance from the strings IMO. I still ran the pole pieces at or below the pickup cover.
Berfore I sold mine I was considering 'frenching' another guard to drop the pickup down to the wood, while still retaining a real finished look.
I was a little ham-handed when I started with the DS so it took me a while to adjust to the super sensititive nature of the pickup. If you come to it with better (lighter and more even) picking hand technique, then it might not be as big a deal. Actually playing the DSP for close to a year improved my right hand technique. I'm way smoother and more even. I'm using a much lighter touch and less compression.
For the 2 weeks after I got my DSP completed - I was like - oh man, what did I do to this bass. After I made the adjustment - it was my number 1 for a lot of gigs. I'll do another fairly soon.

i cut my own plastic ring from scrap material i just happened to have laying around .

I use both finger style and pick but I play with a ligther touch with pick then most people use with their fingers. I do some tapping from time to time as well.
When using a pick I tend to use mediums because I can't stand heavy picks. I also tend to play very dynamically with a pick and lots of muting by rubbing the strings closer to the bridge to slighty deaden the note over time.
I've never played anything darkstar equiped but I, but I think since they are hot pickups and play dynamically and let my amp do the work I should be fine.

the fact that a light touch is needed slightly puts me off as i like to dig in and use heavy pics when i use one. but i think if i needed to i could change my style. i jus need to hear a sample now.
