Chris/Marty debate - Marty was with the band when they produced their best work (although the new album is pretty darn good) but I have seen Chris live twice now with Megadeth. He is a wicked guitar player. Maybe a step sideways but certainly not down with Chris on board.

As much as I love James Lomenzo, I think Ellefson is THE Megadeth bassist.

Lomenzo is great and has a good stage presence. But Ellefson is "the" Megadeth bassist.

The 3 first albums have amazing metal bass lines.

Well, this just made my night -- I was supposed to see them here in Denver a couple weeks ago, but the concert got canceled and rescheduled...something about one of the members of Slayer needing back surgery or something.

Now....I'm glad it got rescheduled....like others have said, D.E. IS the bassist for Megadeth.

Marty Friedman was an idol of mine growing up when I started on guitar. I love his playing and I totally agree with you.
From what I read it seems that David Mustaine also agrees with us Marty is the one who wanted to leave, I think he said something like he felt he outgrew Megadeth's music and attitude.

Was James Lomenzo getting ready to leave Megadeth when you asked Ellefson to join?

James had given us several years of faithful quality service in the bass and backup vocal position, and when this presented itself, it was hard to make the decision to tell him that we were going to do what was right for all of us, because I care so much about James. From a business point of view, Dave's my bassist. Always has been, always will be. Everybody that's been in the bass position for me, they've been brothers and I love them for it, but it's Dave's gig.

Well, I can't tell how he feels, but I believe he understood, and I know that he's gonna benefit from the records that are gonna be sold from the catalog.

Been a Megadeth fan since "Killing". Ellefson/Mustaine were huge influences. Lomenzo was decent, but never really Megadeth. He was in White Lion remember. Big difference.
I liked Marty Friedman in his band "Hawaii" and he's always been fantastic. Not really a fit in Megadeth though. Broderick fits and plays damn well. I wouldn't say Marty has anything on him. I just saw the Lomenzo line up a few months back and they killed live. Only dork was Mustaine. In recent interviews he seems coked up at times, and others completely stoned/drunk. Yay. Jesus drugged asswipe.

I'll agree that Newsted was a better fit and they were better with him, but it's through no fault of Trujillo's I'm sure that Metallica has diminished. The guy is a monster player but I'm not sure he belongs in Metallica. I mean, they have like a 9 minute instrumental on the record with him and no bass solo? Really? He's just way underutilized IMO. But hey sometimes you gotta get the paycheck.

Now I need to go listen to Lights...Camera...Revolution.

Few thoughts that have already been covered or not:

Ellefson belongs in Megadeth.

I can't see how this is a bad thing for Lomenzo, with his rep he should be getting a KILLER gig that might not just be a legacy band like Megadeth is (sorry, but that is how I feel about MD).

Bands talk smack and make up all the time, take Lombardo and Slayer. Actually the reason why I don't play metal is cause of all the unneccasary testosterone outside of the stage, even though it's my favorite genre.

Rob kills Newsted, but I could see Rob stepping aside if Newsted wanted back. Without animosity.

I was just part of a decent gigging band and stepped aside so that the original bass player could come back. Actually it's better this way, I stepped into a band that was good but not necessarily my style, now I got a band that is my taste and have developed many connections and really it works out for everyone.

Rust in peace in its entirety? I am there.
