David Wm. Simms (The Jesus Lizard)

Yow is awesome! No other vocalist would fit that music better. I also think no band better highlighted Albini's production style. And no producer could have recorded them so fittingly. I mean, listen to the record they did for Capitol, without Albini. WAY too clean. It doesn't fit them at all, IMO. Good songs, bad recording.

I guess that's sort of off topic.

I agree. After Down, Liar, Goat, etc. the newer albums were just missing something. I didn't mind the songs - when I saw the songs off the Jesus Lizard EP and Blue live they sounded great. Did Andy Gill produce the newer albums?

This thread looks pretty dead, but I'm new here and I'll give this a shot anyway...David Wm. Sims has been at the top of my bass players list since I first heard the Jesus Lizard and Scratch Acid about a billion years ago. Saw the Jesus Lizard twice but never thought enough to check out what DWS was playing. Anybody have any details about what basses/amps/effects etc. he uses? I see there some limited info on amps in the thread already...is there anything more to add to this?

bass: memphis jazz copy.

cab's: 2 dietz 1x15's and earlier on he also had a 1x18 in the stack. the mesa/boogie diesel 1x15 is the same cab and speaker. the plans for this are online somewhere. it's just the t/s parameters for the speaker model. i forget the # it's and EV something or other.

amps: gk 800rb, traynor ts-50b.

fx: proco rat. i think it's an original, not a turbo.

for the scratch acid reunion it's the same bass thru an ampeg svt/8x10 stack.

i have a ampeg 610hlf...i'm thinking about getting a 410hlf and also uses my b100r in my rig...that way i can have four 10s and a 15...i'm using a 350svt...but may trade for a new b-2r....all are 4 ohms output...would this be all right...i need more lows for my sound...i'm going for a rob wright, or like a bob weston sound...sorry i'm not going to use the 610hlf...and how would i tie the two...sorry don't know that much about multi-cabs...i don't won't to lose any power in the svt-350 or b-2r which every i use

a sansamp bassdriver di will give you the bob weston tone.

Just gotta say, he's a killer bassist. The vocals for Jesus Lizard are a bit of a turn off, but the music is amazing, especially the tone and feel of the rhythm section.

I hadn't listened to JL in about 2 years when I made this comment: 2 years ago I was pretty uptight about music, now I have to agree, David Yow's vocals are a perfect match.

Don't get me wrong, he's a nice guy, I like him just fine
But he's a mouth breather

I've only seen the 800RB in any of the live videos. Except for after they got a big label deal, it looks like he used a tube Ampeg.

I'm not sure if that's true or not. I think he may have only played an SVT when overseas. He's always playing that 800RB with the Dietz cabinets in anything I've seen in the US.

I saw them live once but at the time I wasn't paying attention to gear...
