Davie504 More Annoying Than Ever

Everyone only has just so many original creative ideas in them or just so much information they need to share. Inevitably, if you are forced to keep churning out stuff, it becomes repetitive or degrades into drivel. This guy is just following the pattern. Since being a bit annoying is part of his schtick, it's just that much worse.
That's on Youtube, not the creators. YouTube imposes monthly quotas for videos viewed and subscribers added. You could already have five million subscribers and every one of your videos gets twenty million views, but if you don't add enough new subscribers by the end of January, Google drops you from the AdSense revenue share program in February, and you're suddenly making no money from any videos (Google, however, will continue to). It's a treadmill.
Exactly!Whats annoying is people prefer this kind of stuff to going to show.
Sometimes I am asked to join a project and they dont even want to gig with it just want to make videos.
I saw his videos come up a couple times, and I kept clicking "Not Interested". I have enough stuff like that come up, and I already know how to play the bass. Not interested. It's fine for people who are, I'm sure.
I didn't type in all caps, nor did I say I was proud of never having heard of him. One can't know about everybody who's doing everything everywhere.
Upon further reflection I think he has come up in my feed before, but I ultimately gravitated towards something else on the list that seemed to be of more interest at the time.
There's something like 99% of junk to wade thru out there to get to the 1% of good stuff. Not knocking the guy. I actually feel sorry for him having to spin that hamster wheel more than anything.
It’s called PTG or “Play the Game.”
Had a client who was a program director for ESPN. Awhile back there were a lot of trash talk clips that aired just before commercial breaks on sports shows. I asked him what that was about and he said there’s a truism in the TV world that says: Nobody changes channels if what they just saw pissed them off. So they’re throwing some snotty comment up on the screen just before commercial break so that the rubes will keep sitting there and wait for the jerk to get his comeuppance from some more mature voice later in the show. That way you stayed glued to the same channel while your set box dutifully reports back to your TV provider their ads played all the way through. Something the sponsors, networks, and show hosts are anxiously waiting to here.
Problem with Davie504 is it’s basically a 1-trick pony show. Yeah wow! This guy can slap a bass faster and better than most players probably spank the monkey!!!
But twenty or so shows into it and what new revelations are forthcoming? Answer: nada. So then you start the challenges to mix it up and make it fun.
And those soon morph into throwdowns when polite challenges start getting old. And before you know it, it’s “pro” wrestling all over. Y’know, 1-on-1 becomes 2-on-1, then tag team, then bunkhouse stampedes, then cage matches, and so on further up the ridiculous scale.
Sad.
But that’s “entertainment” folks.

The guy is a monster player, but his videos can be very annoying. I've seen the same trends he's following elsewhere on YouTube, so I'm sure he's just doing what he has to to stay afloat with the advertising gods at Goggle.
The whole online advertising racket is a mystery to me. I can't really understand how anyone who wants to advertise, or the ad companies like Google et al. see any value in these ads. They must have metrics to measure the effectiveness, but I don't see it.
I can tell you that, without question, if you put an ad up in a video I'm trying to watch, my immediate response is to look for the "Skip ad" button. If there isn't one, I mute it, or open another tab until its done. If you put a popup on a page, it could say "You won a million dollars" and I'd never know it. I'll close it without reading it, or giving it a second thought. I don't know how it could ever be effective.

His videos were also meme-full even "back then" when they were short. Now he is a major (judging by number of subs) youtube "content creator", whatever that means, and with that you get all what you described in the first post. And he's not the only one like that, there's many more, he even did crossover/collaboration videos with some of them.
I never enjoyed Davie504s playing or videos.
I’m not saying he isn’t talented or that he can’t play. In my opinion the whole experience is stale, flavorless, and the only point to it seems to be “look what I can do”. To sum it up I find his goals, aspirations, and playing is not very musical.
Additionally, YouTube itself can be a great tool for supplemental material in addition to lessons but I can’t understand how or why anyone would rely on that for a primary source of music education. YouTube is not personalized, flexible, understanding, or motivating (also you make no real connections and get no networking accomplished).

I personally get a kick out of him for what it is; a humorous distraction with some bass content. As any business (which is what it is when he's raking in ~$600k in annual earnings) he had to expand his audience beyond just bass players. With any expansion, you'll lose some of your early acolytes but that's a risk he's been willing to take on to much success (albeit likely fleeting). My 12-year-old son loves him now and we watch him together.

I'm seeing this trend more and more in Youtube. I have to spend a lot more time trying to find real content. How many '10 reasons I hated the new Star Wars videos' do we really need, and this kind of idiocy seems to be creeping into the music instruction/tech stuff, now. Some of these people are actually making a living doing it, so I think they're getting a lot more pressure to constantly put out content, regardless of its quality. Never heard of davie504 before, but now I'm glad I didn't.
Idk if it’s been said yet or not, but blame YouTube. The way they’ve changed their algorithms...It’s crazy. One of the newer things they’ve done is that, regardless of channel size/growth, if the video is not at least 10 minutes long it is significantly less profitable.
I don’t watch the dude, but I’m betting that he can’t make a living off of three to five minute to-the-point videos anymore.

But see the problem with the PTG approach is just what happened with me and ESPN. I just plain stopped turning the channel on. I started watching ESPN in 1981 because I love sports. Watched every night and once they started that nonsense and more, it was over. I rarely turn it on any longer except to watch a game or something and then it's turned off as soon as it's done. Like most things, once Disney gets involved it turns to garbage.
As far as guys I like and find interesting and entertaining and gives some knowledge the Top of my list is Rick Beato and Scotts Bass Lessons. I like those guys quite a bit. There are a couple others but those guys I'll check out nearly all their stuff.
Like always though, I retain the right to "change the channel".
I can give or take Davie's videos. Some are REALLY good and worth the watch.

He is successfully making a living using the bass guitar as his tool of trade. Millions of people know him by name or image. Plus his hands are so big he makes a 34" bass look like a ukelele.
I can't make any of those claims so my hat's off to him.

He's is freakn talented. I don't watch anymore, he's more entertainment than substance. Nothing inherently wrong with that.
