Dean....any love for their basses?

I just picked up a 35 scale Dean Edge 5-FL fretless with 2 EMG HZ pickups.....

Really nice 3 piece maple neck with walnut strips in between.....it has fret lines & markers on the side so its easy for me who is new to fretless & 35 scale.

Very impressed so far......this one was made in Korea.....no issues with tuners, hardware, pots etc.

Where were the various Dean basses made? Any certain ones seem to be a particularly great bass/value?

I don't like to swap pickups & parts anymore and this bass needs no upgrades imo!

Always remember your first. Got my first bass in 2001. Dean Edge 1. The look just grabbed me. Almost love at first sight type of thing.

Yes!I've been playing my Sledgehammer quite a bit lately.
It's currently my favorite.

But now I'm considering getting a preamp with a mid control.
Or add a single midrange control.
I have a question about the"Hammer"on the left of your picture

I understand that you don't have it anymore.Yes.
But I notice that it had four knobs on it.
A three band preamp?
What brand of preamp was it?
Or did you add a separate mid control?

Years ago Amazon had a deal on Dean Edge Q4 Bartolini basses for $129. I bought two and ended up selling them but they were great basses. Also bought a black Eric Bass Hillsboro for around $250 and was really impressed by the quality.

As far as I know, yes as they're still selling them on Amazon.
This is probably the best place to buy any Dean basses as they're not often stocked at GC stores. They often have used Hillsboro basses there too.

In fact there's a used pink one there for $129....hmm....drop in some SD Quarterpound pickups and you'll have a lean, mean , pink machine!
Amazon.com: Dean Custom Zone Bass, Flourecent Pink: Musical Instruments

This one is the one I would love to try though. With EMG-Hz pickups. Entwistle bass.

I had one. I was very underwhelmed. It wasn't a BAD bass, but it didn't do anything for me and I sold it after playing it a couple of times.

I've owned four Deans so far. My first one was a white Hillsboro single...nice active bass, very nice neck, too.
Just bought one of these after trading my old Exotica to a buddy...with D'Addario tapewounds the plugged-in tone was incredible.

My old one was natural but I just had to have one in blue.
I've tried quite a few acoustic basses, Fender, Ibanez, Ovation, Wasburn and Michael Kelly. Sure, there are some I haven't tried but I seriously doubt anything would sound as good as this. Fishman electronics etc... can't compare to Dean's Aphex system.
I'm not talking about the electronics they use in their budget basses. The Aphex system is on an entirely different plateau.

There is love out there still... so yeah, I have some deans that I like a lot.
I do have a stylist in black. Sold my eab because the the stylist is just as loud unplugged. Sold my first dean, a rhapsody four. Converted another four to frettless. Best sounding of my bunch is my rhapsody five string. (Low B tuning) Best feeling, jamming, getting it on bass is my razor five string. (low E tuning) I have the tiger eye EP5. I bought it as a standby and have barely played it. No one wants to buy it! I have the rhapsody 12 and 8 stringers.
That’s it in the dean stable, but yes, I kick myself for not having bought the sledgehammer back in the day. Because I have always wondered about them.

Can’t say that I made a living doing gigs, but had a great time playing in the bands I was in.
If some one wants a deal on an ep5 let me know. Good as brand new.
They still have inventory all over the place for about $869 or so. This one hasn’t left my house in the years I have owned it and there’s not a scratch on it.

Thanks B-Mac for the kind words. Yeah, I was a big fan of the nt. Had the fiver, loved it. Then one day at the local music shop I saw the rare discontinued four string nt hanging. Seems Skip likes to hang on to stuff in his warehouse for years, then bring it out later on...
Well, brought home a brand new four string razor that day!

I was with them for a couple of years...LOVE their USA made basses, great necks and feel.
I also had their Hillsboro import...after a pickup change and setup , it was a nice bass for the money.
Very underrated basses.
