Dean Club!!!

You are the man with the 411!!! Lol
I'm assuming they didn't make as many of them in 2011 as they did in 2010, because I never see the silver or cherryburst ones for sale...........man, I REALLY want one of the Cherryburst FM ones! I dont think I've ever seen one of those for sale........
Do you know what year they stopped making the "J" and "single" Hillsboros?
It seems I'm working my way thru their bass offerings from 2009-2013 or so..... the Spire, Demonator, Z Tour, Eric Bass Gold & Hillsboro J ........they all only lasted a few years (at least the non-metalman versions) and are amazing basses with fairly high end appointments.
@barclaybass
Here are a bunch of links for your Hillsboro lust!

At the request of B-Mac , and with the recent postings of some nice Hillsboro models. I am reposting a few pics of my USA 1000 Hillsboro. I did have up for sale and decided to keep it. One of my top basses .View attachment 3955661

Sir, I shall PM you my address post haste, a recent national law proclaimed that all gorgeous tobacco burst Hillsboro basses are to be housed with me until further notice. Thank you for you compliance.

Lol.......DUUUUUUDE, that is effing SWEEEEET!!!!
Seriously, gorgeous bass my friend I'd rock that bad boy onstage in a heartbeat, so classy yet so rock & roll!
I know they made an import Hillsboro "single" with a tobacco burst finish, but I've never seen one for sale.
But damn I'd love to snag a USA Hilly like yours.........oh well, someday (as I wistfully stare into the distance and dream)

Barclaybass, your work is excellent! I appreciate the tips! (Too late, though, I got carried away with the sandpaper tonight, lol!) I built a 5 string Explorer type bass from a kit last year and finished it with gloss black Krylon acrylic lacquer. I think I had some bad luck because I’m fairly certain the paint “colormaxx” paint I used was old - like 10 years old. The instrument is passable but I’m not satisfied. It was either bad paint, the Houston humidity or both but the Krylon paint was garbage. Oh, and it comes off if wiped with naphtha!

I’ve got another kit on the way, a custom V 5 string bass. The work on my Dean Zone is really just an excuse to practice with my Stew Mac nitro rattle cans that I bought a while back.

I’ve been re-reading Dan Erlewine’s book on guitar refinishing and the spray shellac is going to be a barrier between the old paint and new. I believe the Zone bass is finished with flat poly and I got some of it off tonight.

You are correct, I only needed to scuff it up a bit with 400 grit sandpaper, but since I’ve gone this far, I’m going to try to get most of the old paint off before spraying it with the schellac sealer.

Any idea what this wood is?

This is just practice on a bass that was pretty much abandoned.

Thanks again for the info, your finishing looks great!

Thanks dude ........we'll see how great this one looks after I clear coat and wet sand it, its the first time I'm trying Acrylic lacquer. Hopefully it polishes to a nice glass finish, I'm trying it because my research tells me acrylic dries to a harder finish than other lacquers, so I'm hoping it protects the wood and paint a little better.

Not crazy about the Motto, but I LOVE that orange sparkle!!!!!
I'm all about loud finishes.
That's one thing I can say about Dean, their paint/finish game is strong! Just look at the Hillsboros for example. Lots of cool color/pickguard combinations available, it seem like every year a new color would be available.
Criminy........I'm a BC Rich collector (some might call it obsessed!) and for many many years you could have whatever color you wanted, as long as it was black or red!!!!
That drives me crazy! A lot of companies are like that. Take a chance!!! I HATE black basses and guitars, yet I own 12 of them because that's all I could find that particular shape in or it's all they offered it in!
Frigging fingerprint magnet, black is!

You are right. Stacked high and low. If I remember right there were 1000 made in the 1000 series. Everything is still 100% original. I purchased this bass back around 2010.
Found this catalog page with more info.
Wish they'd do more things like this.

FWIW - the bass I finished in acrylic lacquer polished up beautifully with a polishing pad from Walmart that you attach to your drill and the liquid polishing liquids from StewMac. I ended up with a very thin finish which is what I wanted. It sank into the sanding scratches which was kind of a bummer but that tells me it’s thin which is what I want.

All these posts regarding shiny basses...the carnage has begun on my project. Two sheets of sandpaper, 90 minutes of sanding....

Maybe it’s my imagination but when I got that stuff off, the body felt “brighter” and more resonant. You could knock on it and hear it’s light and dry. That’s the desired effect!

The bone nut upgrade just arrived.

I think it’s a perfect fit. I may need to learn how to file nut slots. How hard can that be?

As long as you are doing all of this modding, I would totally route that bad boy out and add a nice fat musicman pickup to that bass under the existing pickup.

I agree! Unfortunately, I don’t own a router. There is so much stuff I want to build, I just don’t have the tools. Not yet. I retire in a year and hope to build a serious workshop - no women, pets, or children allowed in the workshop!!!

Ok......so I was bored!
Frigging quarantine.
I've never 'discovered ' a model of bass and ran out and bought 3 of them within a few months!
Actually........I got my first Dean about a year ago and now I have 6. It took me 25 years to collect 15 BC Richs.
To me they are very similar brands in many ways.
Now I just need a Razorback bass dammit!!!!!
