Dean Club!!!

Lol........thanks bro, I was actually researching a bunch of these and reading a ton of reviews the other day and I've pretty much decided on this Krylon Glitter blast, pics I saw online of guitars that some people have used this on looked AMAZING!
I tried the Rustoleum glitter paint at Home Depot and 4 cans in a row either wouldn't spray or spewed globs of glitter everywhere, so I wont be using that one.
I appreciate the links brother

This is what the wood under my Dean Zone bass’s former “Translucent Black” finish looks like when it’s really cleaned up and stained:

Lots of flaws, red Bondo-type filler stuff, etc. I don’t care. I think the wood looks cool. I haven’t applied a finish yet, just sanding, grain filler, and a little stain, but if it goes on ok, I’m gonna finish this guy in clear.

I think that turned out quite nice for a bass body painted black. What grit did you get up to?

Hey B-Mac and Rev12_11,

I posted a question at the Luthier’s Corner forum about identifying the wood the body is made of. It unintentionally ended up being a refinishing diary, lol. https://www.talkbass.com/threads/what-is-this-wood.1478553/

I
got a paint respirator on (the dust mask didn’t cut it, I somehow still breathed in all kinds of stuff getting the paint off, dammit! It even made me a little sick. Ok now...)
I worked through 120 grit, 150, 180, 220, and finally 350. Then, I applied grain filler which darkened whatever sealer is still on there. I didn’t sand to bare wood. The spots where I did sand through showed up so I wiped it with Minwax oil based stain.

I think it’s ok. Today I scuff sanded imperfections out and re-wiped with a very lightly stain dampened rag.

The next step is clear shellac, which is supposed to work as a barrier between just about everything and the clear coat. I’m gonna wait a total of 48 hours and make sure the stain is dry before doing the shellac.

After that, it’s clear nitro....I just hope everything stays compatible and I end up with a hard, thin gloss finish. That’s the real goal.

The photo below shows the body at its worst. The upper horn looks terrible where I sanded thru sealer but it’ll be covered by the strap.

I will absolutely post pics of the rebuild. I’m having a lot of fun working on this thing.

Happy Labor Day!!

I just hit the Zone XM with the first coat of gloss clear Minwax poly spray paint.

So far so good...I think I can handle any drips or orange peel with sanding and buffing. I don’t see any yet. What I don’t want is bluing....we’re at the high limit of humidity down here in Texas today.

. I trust my garage spray booth is drier....I probably should’ve waited but just couldn’t.

I got the 3rd and final coat on just before it started pouring rain!

This Zone XM body is nice and glossy. 3 coats, with an hour and a half between coats.
Now, if I can just leave it alone for about 3 days.

I believe this stuff really is fast drying. It smelled after spraying (I did wear a respirator but went in afterward to peek at it.). However, an hour later, not much at all.

Maybe if it’s not smelling at all next weekend, I might wet sand the body and buff with polishing compound. I did see one spot that looked like it might need it.

What is it about painting stuff that’s so much fun? The prep work was unpleasant but spray painting is awesome - especially when it goes the way it’s supposed to!

Thanks! Even though it was inexpensive, it's a very good playing instrument. It's going to be a player. Not perfect, but neither am I, lol!

I think I subconsciously re-created the 1st bass I got when I was 16. It was a natural Fender Jazz Bass copy. I traded it in for a guitar and always regretted not keeping it and giving it a chance. I think I only played the Jazz bass for about 6 months. It was a beauty.
