Based on what you just posted you should be good.![]()
I am really sorry, but what type of finish is on the body I really do not know. As far at the back of the neck goes I don't think I would paint it. I like the thin satin finish on the back of my Edge 09. I do not care for a gloss finish on the back of any neck regardless of the manufacturer. Just makes it 'slow' & 'sticky' to play.Hey B-Mac, it’s obvious you are quite a Dean enthusiast. Just wondering if you know what that “Transluscent” finish is on my Zone bass body. Whatever it is, it’s the same on my “Vendetta” guitar.
The body finish doesn’t seem robust enough to be polyurethane but that’s probably what it is. I don’t know if they’d use nitrocellulose lacquer on a budget bass like this. I really don’t know for certain what the heck kind of paint is on the body! Any idea?
The neck has a really thin coat of something on it - again, it’s so thin I can’t imagine that’s poly. I’m debating whether or not to put a nice fresh coat of lacquer on the back of the neck.
I am a beginner guitar builder/refinisher. The plan for the body is to sand off as much as I can of that stuff. From everything I’ve studied about guitar refinishing, a barrier of schellac between old and new paint should avoid incompatibilities.
I just thought I’d gather as much info as I can before the carnage on the old Zone bass in the workshop begins!
Oh - look what I found buried at the bottom of my gig bag!

Kinda cool, huh? I remember cutting that out and putting it in there for reference.
Cool Custom Zone! I see you made some mods. Can you tell us what they are?
A work Horse Acoustic? Cool! How long have you had it?I always forget that i have a Dean Acoustic Bass. I actually like this thing a lot. Its literally a beater bass. Ive thrown it across the room, ive hit stuff with it, i take it fishing on the boat with me.....it never fails tho. Original strings on it, rarely goes out of tune. Ill drink to this Dean Bass!!!!

I like those scroll type horns on the two plain looking basses. What are they? Carl Thompson basses?I always forget that i have a Dean Acoustic Bass. I actually like this thing a lot. There're a few members here who actually gig with these or play them at church services.
@McG
@Leftka
and @McDean
come to mind.
There are a few others who do too.
A few who play either EAB or EABC
Just a couple of mods. I swapped the pickup for a GFS Hot Alnico Pro, routed it for a front panel so I could use panel mount controls, and rewired for a mute button and tone button (.033uf). Also added a retro Hogwarts Crest, and purple aurora strings.Cool Custom Zone! I see you made some mods. Can you tell us what they are?

Ok, I’m beginning to think about refinishing my Dean bass. No...I’m not actually doing anything yet, just thinking about it.
View attachment 3950646This bass was cannibalized for parts when I broke some tuning machines and bridge screws on a kit bass I built. The condition I left the Dean in is unacceptable - I am ashamed....I played, practiced, and learned so much stuff on this bass.
Plan:
1. Disassemble
2. Neck will be cleaned up but otherwise will be left alone.
3. Sand that flat translucent brown paint off.
4. Spray with shellac, let cure, sand some more.
5. Spray with gloss black nitro.
6. Let cure for weeks, spray clear nitro, wait for weeks.
7. Buff to a shine.
8. Install upgraded chrome bridge and chrome tuners.
9. Reinstall pickup, pots, and neck.
Ok, that’s the plan....let’s see if I actually do it, lol.

If it's red underneath, then you can officially call it Firemist Copper Rose now.Good luck with the refurb/upgrade! It's really fun to spec out an old bass exactly how you want it to be!
I just wanted to say that you dont have to put Varnish or anything else on an old paintjob before applying new paint!
Just take 400 grit sandpaper and go over the entire bass until it has a matte type of appearance and no shiny spots.
That will give the new paint more than enough to grab onto and adhere.
Also you absolutely dont need to spend 40 dollars a can for fancy paints from Stew Mac. They are nice, but I've done several Rustoleum jobs that look AMAZING if you do it the right way.
Here is a Squier Jazz that I used Rustoleum to paint over the Red finish it had. It's a new paint they have with primer and paint in one, this is "Copper Rose"

I'm gonna use Rustoleum acrylic lacquer and then wet sand with 400, 800, 1200 and 2000 and then finish it to a glass shine with rubbing compound.
You can get a beautiful factory finish this way using all spray cans. There are plenty of videos on youtube on how to wet sand clear coats.
There is no need for "nitro" and having 5000 worth of equipment and special formulations of paint at all.
Is it nice? Yes! Quicker? Probably!
But it can be done without it!
I'm thinking about adding neon green wings to my Demonator like the limited run they had done.
Nice!
