Dean Club!!!

Thanks for the comments, Dean Club!!! It’s ready to go!
Prior to final assembly, I sprayed the volume and tone pots with DeOxit contact cleaner. There is no scratchy noise but the controls turn very easily now. I heard that can happen. I’m ok with it as I’d prefer to be noise free. The bass didn’t come with shielding so I added that. It’s nice and quiet.

As a band mate / friend once told me, “..all that’s great. Now - if you could just play it!” Lol!!
Yup, time to play this thing! I learned a lot of stuff on it and we’ve got more to learn!!!

Many thanks to our fearless leader, B-Mac, who donated some chrome tuners to the re-build project! That was definitely the finishing touch as it didn’t quite look right with the original black tuners.

Looks great!
Did you spray the deoxit on the control shafts where they meet the housing of the pot with them off of the bass or still on the bass?

All electronics (“Electronics”, LOL - that’s a stretch ...two soldered together pots and an output jack) were removed and cleaned when they were out of the bass body. Since there’s always a risk of damaging a pot with the heat from the iron (mainly from soldering the ground wire into the top), I just clipped the pickup wire and removed everything keeping it intact. I desoldered nothing.

I sprayed the pots through the little slots and rotated them.

TV TV tuner cleaner is probably the best for this, and has been used for years but contact cleaner works as well. The downside to contact cleaner is it totally degreases the pot making it too easy to rotate. I knew this before I did it and am ok with it. Those controls are silent, & that was the goal.

What are you looking for specifically?
There’s a good chance that I already posted it here.
Here’s a good source for obtaining catalog pages of Dean and other makes of basses.
VintAxe.com Vintage Guitars - Vintage Electric Guitar Catalogs

Thank you!

I run Instagram and Facebook pages for Dean Basses and I want to have as much information about Dean basses as possible. Mostly the years of manufacturing for each model of bass. Also information about what models Dean produced from the 80's through to 2010 so that I can provide accurate information to followers.

Hello fellow Dean owners!

Here's a pic of my DB91R. The only thing I know about it is that it plays great! I got it for free, which may be the best used Dean price ever. I've scrolled through all 131 pages of the Dean Club, and definitely want to join.

Awesome.
That is a Dean from the ‘Tropical Music’ Era.
Dean Zilensky sold Dean guitars around 1986.
Tropical Music owned Dean until around 1996. Dean Zelinsky sold the business to Oscar Medeiros of Tropical Music, who gained ownership of the brand from 1986, and until 1995 focused on selling to Latin bands overseas. The company had all but disappeared from the American market at that point.
Elliot Rubinson bought the Dean brand from Tropical Music in 1997.
It was made part of Armadillo Enterprises which includes Luna Guitars and DDrums.
Unfortunately I don’t have any catalogs from that time period, but if you paged through all 131 pages of Dean Club!!! you came across some info/vids of your bass.

Free is definitely a great price!:)

Yours looks to be in great shape!:hyper:

Welcome to Dean Club!!!

I’ll fix you up with a number in a few minutes.

Would you happen to have a picture of the serial number?

Thanks for joining me on this rebuild journey, B-Mac and everybody! I reassembled it tonight, did a quick setup, and am impressed with what a good bass it is. Low action, no buzzing, neck needed no adjustment. It was a good bass to start with which is why letting it go to waste was such a crime.

I’ll post a demo of me playing it and maybe a slideshow of the rebuild. This instrument was worth the effort. It’s actually better than the bass I built from a kit last year.

Based on the controls that is a DB91 (which you have stated)
Not sure what the 'R' designates?
The DB95 has 4 knobs arranged differently

Recent Dean convert.........never paid them much mind----then I scored this little lovely at a Pawn Shop for 90.00 (yes 90.00) they didnt realize what they had

So I went from NO Deans to 2 Deans ---both Neck through----both AMAZING build quality ---at any price---and both scored for HUGE deals.

NExt To Peavey USA stuff----I think Dean is one of the best values in guitars today--
So...........MAY I have a NUMBER please ??
Is your Demonator a Korean model?
