Dean Club!!!

I’ve never seen one that high before. That Edge bass is actually based on the Dean Edge 4, just a 5 string version.
They all had DMT pups. The exception being the Dean Edge 4Q which had a quilt top & EMG HZ pups along with the 5 & 6 string versions.

The Edge 4QB had a quilt top and Barts and only came in a 4 string version.

What has me stumped is the ‘D’ on the serial number as well as the next four numbers. ‘US’ would be ‘Un Sung’ factory and ‘E’ would be ‘World’ factory later changing to ‘W’ around 2015-2016.

Based on the horizontal ‘Dean’ script logo, this came after 2007-2008 per the catalogs.

A 2012 model with an ‘E’ or ‘US’ would have ‘12’ right after the factory letter(s). But this has 2012. Never seen a Korean Edge 4 with a ‘D’.

I’ve seen other Edge models made in Indonesia and China, but not the Edge 4 or 5 & 6 string variants.

You’ll definitely need to shim that bass, but they’re usually not like that. I recently picked up an Edge Q4B that has quite a low action. I’d say they definitely cut the neck pocket too deep on that day!:woot:

Hope it turns out well. I love their necks that are satin finish thin, narrow and 12” radius.

Please post a pic when you have it sorted out.:hyper:

PS: that finish is called Powder Silver and you don’t see a lot of them.
Thanks @B-Mac,
Im surprised its going to need a shim too. My China Dean 5 string set up surprisingly well. I expected this one to be easy, it’s definitely built with nicer parts. Maybe this is why my friend doesn’t care for this one.
Ill keep you posted.

Dean Magnetic Technologies

The Korean and other Asian models that have them are all made at those factories.

However, you can or used to be able to purchase DEAN USA DMT pups from their factory in Tampa, Florida.

I bought four different sets.

Two sets of Jazz pups (one Hot set and one Vintage set) and the same with P style pups that I bought for my Paramount and Juggernaut basses.

Scott Fraser at Dean is the one to contact for getting DEAN USA DMT pups

His email is [email protected] & [email protected] (if he’s still with Dean)
Thanks @B-Mac, interesting info.

Looks like I'm back in the Dean Club, although some of you may not feel so altruistic about it when you see what I'm back with.

My only Dean was a Rhapsody 8 that I really enjoyed, but it was too hard to integrate on a gig that might happen a couple times a year on a couple songs, so I traded it for the neck that's on my 76 P body, and replaced it with an EHX Micro Pog and later a Pitchfork (pfft on the purists...works just as well for all intents and purposes).

But then I got a whole bunch of work reward points a month ago, and I decided I had to have this for the punk rock studio project I'm going to do once my life settles down a bit:

Dean Banjo.jpg

Dean Backwoods 6 string banjo that's ready to lay down the heavy punk, as you can see by the Devo energy dome. Got a KNA piezo for it because it was cheap and super easy to install. I'm not a banjo player but I can play guitar, so I figured a cheap beginner's banjo like this one would be suitable for recording some banjo power chords. And it is. But banjos are way more of a PITA to set up than basses and guitars, and cheap ones are especially hard. And when you buy cheapos, you absolutely have to learn to set them up or you'll have to pay someone to do it. And the hardware kind of sucks. Still don't have the action as low as I'd like, but it's getting there.

Tonally I've heard better, but it does sound like a banjo. But the one thing I didn't count on is that the gulf between beginner and pro model banjos is much much wider than it is with basses and guitars, apparently. On the other hand, it's super light, and I'm having a blast playing it and re-learning the fingerstyle techniques I used to know when I was a teenager. I'll use it to get in the swing of playing banjo, but I can already see a better one in my future when I finally get good enough at fingerstyle again where I could take on a 5-string. I can't recommend it highly but it's usable.

Anyway, there aren't many opportunities on here for me to show off my new banjo, so I'm hijacking this thread temporarily. But I highly recommend getting yourself one because they are super fun...just spend more money on one than I did :D

I shimmed the heck out of the neck, the truss rod is maxed out but she plays pretty good now.

Any Edge owners, how big is the gap between the body and the overhang of the fretboard At the 24th fret. This one was zero, now it looks better( I didn’t realize there was an overhang till I removed the neck)

The pocket on that bass body was either cut too deep or the end of the neck was just too thin. They all have a gap under the overhang. I’ll have to look at a few of mine to tell you what they usually are.

I bought one of these for a woman I was dating a while ago. We’re still friends and she still plays it now and then, but she plays her acoustic guitars much more. Banjos actually had 6 string versions in the late 19th century regardless what the banjo purists say. Pete Seger and Earl Scruggs pretty much are responsible for the 4 & 5 string banjos of today and style of playing and are not tuned like a 6 string banjitar.

Not being a banjo player, I was impressed by the ‘look’ of the Dean 6 string backwoods banjo while knowing nothing about banjos in general.

Have fun with it. Dean did make an electric version of this banjo. They also at one time made a SG style electric guitar that had a banjo head within a cut out area of the body of the guitar.

Oh, and welcome!

I don’t see any previous posts by you so maybe you posted before in a Dean club that fizzled out?

LOL! I can't remember if I posted it in here or not. I do know I posted about it a couple times so I thought maybe I did it in here.

Anyway, they do still make an electric version of the Backwoods 6, but apparently it's made a little different with a wooden pot instead of this metal one on mine. But if you want an electric banjo in that banjo-in-guitar fashion, it looks like you have to go to Gold Tone these days.

EDIT: Looks like you can still get the Dean version...

I don't see very many people posting that they gig with their Dean's. I do quite often and it is usually with the newer Dean Edge 3's. Last night I decided to take out the Dean Rhapsody Q4's. I think I am going to have to take them out again on tonight's show. Really nice basses.
