Dean Club!!!

I picked up this Squier a few years back. I think it's a mb4. I paid $40 and it came with a hard case. The neck below the scarf joint is birdseye maple. The rosewood fretboard is very thick and highly figured with a abalone skull. Looks like Bart Simpson had it custom made.View attachment 4348992 View attachment 4348993 View attachment 4348996

Now that I look at this fretboard, it's one of the best I've seen. It is so thick and figured that the grain on the edge is wild too. What a waste!View attachment 4349010
Squier?
You in the right place?:D

Oh wise clubmasters please accept my petition for membership! Attached are pictures certifying my worthiness!

I wanted to get a better fretless and bought this about a month ago. Unlined fretless are sort of hard to find and it looked good on FB. The seller was selling it for a friend who he claimed was a hoarder and bought this years ago and never played it. There is not a scratch, mark or blemish on this. It was strung with rounds when I got it and there is no fingerboard wear whatsoever - none. I'm inclined to think this is an instrument in brand new barely played condition.

Overall it seems like a very well made instrument. The little I could find online about this is the body is basswood, the neck five piece maple and walnut, double action truss rod and Dean pickups.

That said, the neck had a pretty significant back bow which it has taken me some time to remedy. Also I am still going through strings to find a set that sounds good on this instrument.

Playing it has been kind of a new experience. For the past few years I have been playing a fretted '56 P knockoff with a little '51 single coil. One volume, one tone. The Dean is active and has a volume, blend, treble and bass knobs. Not as much volume or variation in tone as my old SR, but a big change from the old passive '56 knockoff, for sure, especially the pickup that is so close to the bridge.

I can't tell whether I really like it or not yet. I normally prefer much wider necks and this one is very narrow, but so far I haven't felt cramped like I have with prior narrow necks. The two active pickups are certainly intriguing and at last practice it was fun to find different sounds. Light and comfortable, very well balanced. I find myself drawn to playing it a lot more than other instruments I have had so maybe my bringing it home was a good thing.

There is very little information on TB or elsewhere on the web about this bass. Any ideas what year this instrument is? Thanks.

Based on the serial number and orientation of the Dean Script Logo your bass appears to be a 2009 model.
I own a 5 string version with the same finish tuned E,A,D,G,C and love it though I am not a very good fretless player. Having it tuned this way makes it much easier to play a 5 string for obvious reasons.
I love Dean Edge necks, regardless of model, especially satin finished back of necks. Thin and narrow.
Here is a page from a 2008 catalog.
dean_2008_catalog 30.jpg

This came from the ‘World’ factory in Korea (E in S/N) which has made Schecter and Epiphone basses.

Also, consider yourself fortunate that this bass still has the original Grover tuners. These often get cannibalized and replaced with no-name tuners.

Cool. It seems very well made. 2009 eh? That means it was in storage a long time.

Dean started using the horizontal script logo around 2007 per the catalogs I have. Based on the '09' in your S/N this would be correct. The Catalog page I provided is from 2008, which as you can see also has the horizontal script logo rather than the vertical script logo. Unfortunately I only have the 'New for NAMM' 2009 catalog, which doesn't have this bass in it since it was already an existing model from a previous year.
