Dean Club!!!

Yep, I did. Though I never saved a copy of the catalogs down the line, back in the day I spent quite a bit of time studying them. If I remember correctly my EP5 tiger eye is a 2005.
S/n US07091497
I scored it new off one of the many ads for those that were there at the time on eBay. I think I paid $836.
Once posted it on craigs list for 450 and no one called on me. I have fiddled a bit on it, but it is still like new.
Planning a string change away from the original to the roto sounds, but have not gotten around to it. I figure I'll just keep it and use it as an alternative sounding bass during sessions and recording.

I am some what ignorant about SOME things. Before I get started, will these medium scale strings fit my edge?
I chose this gauge as to not have to file the brass nut. And what I mean is length.
@2many
The strings you purchased are medium scale (32”) and your Edge Pro is long scale (34”)

More than likely they’ll be long enough but the winding length may be too short. What this means is that the string taper will start before the nut rather than after the nut which will make the string set lower, be lose (causing intonation issues) and possibly cause fret buzz at the first or second fret. The string taper should always start just after the nut and before the tuning machine.

You can do a dry run and place the new string next to the old string from bridge to nut and see where the string taper starts.

The Rotosound strings you bought may possibly work on your Stylist.

I say ‘possibly’ because even though the Stylist is 32” scale it has a trapeze piece which may require the use of long scale strings too.

For your Pro ‘medium gauge’ (thickness of string range) would be fine, but ‘medium scale’ (length of string) is not fine.

The Edge Pro originally came with either .040 to .100 or .045 to .105

The modern Edge pro select comes with the latter.

Thanks, very helpful. Thank you for looking after me!
Ya know, I still have a hankering to do that with the EP5, but I'm not in a hurry. When I bought those roto sounds, I took a guess. A wrong guess most likely. I have yet to open the packs and check the lengths, but looks to be I have the wrong set.
And not today either as it is JAM day with my buddy. We have been doing some amazing material lately.

Here’s a good resource for bass strings with winding length information Bass String Lengths by Manufacturer

Here’s one just for LaBella

You're the man!
Strings -- simple -- but a subtle headache at times... What to do, what to do
Thickness, length -- this core, that core, this winding, that winding, this metal that metal...
Little string story...
Just saw Vic Wooten this past Sunday W/ Steve Bailey and a drummer, that had great touch Derico Watson... An exceptional show... Didn't want it to end... Vix n Bailey really played well, playing supportively for each other, leaving a lot of space for each other to take the lead... It was a great night... Vix was much more "minimal" than when I had seen him the previous 2x...

Got to shoot the sh*t w/ him afterwards about our Hartke amps and his strings DR etc... As i had seen in vids, uses really light strings 40 55 75 95...
I have recently bought some lights ( E 100) to put less stress on my hands/fingers, down from E-105... So extra light strings really intreaged me...
There was a pkg of his DRs out on a table nearby, that his tech handed him, which he then handed to me to look at...
As we were departing he told to keep the pkg of strings. Yeeeeehhhhaaaaa!!!!
I've got some strings with Victors authentic mojo on them... My bass playing life will change!!
So, I'm psyched to put them on my Dean B2... Lay out my bass, open the pkg of Wooten's DR extra- lights, adrenalin pumping, only to discover the G string is broken up by what would have been the nut... I take out the rest of the strings (wound up, out of the sleeves) and unwind them, only to find that the strings have been cut in half -- presumably as part of a quick- string change by the tech... BUMMER...
Reality comes crashing down on my ordinary bass playing chops... I will not be the benefit of having super chops mojo on my strings... Oh well...
It still was a great show, bought Vic's two books, so maybe ill get a little of that mojo from reading his words...

Don't cut your B2 in half to use those special strings!

VW is definitely amazing. I saw him pre-Covid (December 2017) with Dennis Chambers and Bob Franceshini on sax.

Interesting 3 piece... Dennis Chambers, pretty damn good dra ummer, one of the best!

Maybe I can tie them together??!! Gorilla glue them... Weld them...
Or buy a new set, and put them in the box and make believe........................

My son purchased a used Dean Metalman V bass last week. He brought it over to me today to set up for him. Unfortunately the trussrod nut is rounded out inside. The current neck relief isn’t too bad but was hoping to straighten the neck just a touch more.
I got the string height at a nice playable height and intonation spot on. It’s a neat bass in nice shape and plays pretty good. I just wish that he would have asked me to go along with him to check it out. Oh well.
I’d like to try and take out the old nut and replace it. Any idea what size Allen key fits? When I initially tried to adjust, it looked like a 4 mm would fit, but the tool kept spinning. Also, are TR nuts standard size once I find out the size for the Allen key?
I appreciate any info.

It may not be metric, from what you're saying.

So it's only been like... 3 years, but hi again! I've still got my Dean Paramount, and just recently put some new strings on it - Labella Low Tension Flats. They sound super old school but are easy on the fingers (they feel like GLASS). Admittedly I haven't been playing my Dean much lately because I acquired a Fender Highway One Jazz Bass, but with these new strings I think I'll be putting quite a few more miles on it.

Sound sample - no eq, just direct into Reaper. Fingers then pick.

Sweet!

Glad to hear from you! ;)

Nice playing. I like the growl, especially with the pick.
Thank you! It's definitely got a nice tone to it without any eq tweaking - very old school. I've got an EMG Geezer Butler pickup on the way I plan to get installed, keep that old school sound but boost the output. I had planned on trying a Dean USA pickup but waited too long and they wound up discontinued.

thank you very much. I found db 90 and db95 on the internet. they are very similar. but these guitars did not have such a body cutout. The inscription on the body is not a sticker. it's varnish. pu,s are active. the owner had it for a long time in the basement. was in a very bad state. well that did not lead the neck. the battery has been damaged. are these pu,s good? what should be the string height on this guitar? I play regular guitar. I'm just learning bass. I oiled the neck and polished the body. the volume knobs made a terrible noise. i fixed it. there were almost no scratches on the case. and polished the frets. I bought the guitar for $65. along with a small amplifier. thank you very much again. sorry for my inaccurate english.

$65? Whoa! That's a good deal!

Here's a page from a catalog

I'm going to say that is a DB94 since it is 4 string and Active.
A DB 91 is 4 string and Passive
A DB 95 is 5 string and Active

So, I'm going solely by the process of elimination as I do not have a lot of info on the Dean Tropical Music Era owned by Oscar Medeiros. Do a search within this thread for Tropical and DB91 and DB95 for more information (videos mostly).

tropical era a.jpg

Also, I believe, but I have no documentation, that these basses during this era were actually made by Samick in South Korea from 1990 to 1995.

wanted to add more. assembly is very good. and I don't understand why it was cheap. for this price you can now buy a guitar only made of cardboard. and not like Chinese plywood toys. I also have expensive ernie ball and ibanez electric guitars. They don't go that far in terms of quality. even though they cost me $2,500 each.
