Dean Club!!!

I got it delivered to the house today. I’m on tour right now. I’ve got a cart loaded up from hipshot and a new pickup ready to go. Gonna get wd to get a purple pick guard for it. Will post pics when I get it ready

Can't wait to see the 'Hilly' up and running!!

this one is what I'm looking at buying. I like the semi transparent black and the goat head like headstock is cool. I like interesting ones like that or the old Tobias headstocks.

That is a really nice looking Edge 4 considering that it is 25 years old!!

Dean basses are great! So many “better than the avg 1st time player” basses. The Dean edge, staple of rock and a step up from a sound gear from Ibinez.
However, the beat Dean bass, is not a Dean. It’s a DZPL.

Even though this Dean Club is oriented more toward the Elliot Rubinson era of Dean basses, we welcome Dean Zelinsky Vintage Era bass owners, Tropical Music era bass owners, DBZ era bass owners and DZPL era bass owners!

Nice looking Mule Bass!

taken from the tool shed while I'm woodshedding. Lol thanks for the club invite. I'm really liking the finish on this bass. And the neck too. I'm still trying to find it's voice. I dropped the string height and it's getting there. I still need to polish the frets and try some different strings. Bmac says this one was made in 1998. It's got a couple scratches and things showing its been used but definitely not abused. Hard to believe it's 26 years old. Lol it's making me old too.

Just a little bump to my topic on string stiffness and scale length. So I found a pretty nice thread on the topic and came away with the idea that 35" is generally going to increase the stiffness of the strings vs 34" using the same string and setup. Definitely felt that with the new edge 5er. More stiffness results in many people liking the e and b string better and having more room to downtune before it gets too floppy. That was the main premise of building 35" scale basses. Only downside is the tension of the strings and some complaints about the g string. However I'm finding that the g sounds great to me. The only thing I see myself doing is probably going for more flexible strings or lower gauge in my usual taste of strings.

@Steve Burke may be able to help you out with this. He was recommending some strings on an ABG VI and my question to him was about less string stiffness. It appears that to reduce the strings that are stiff you replace them with a slightly thinner gauge. Not sure what is out there, but he definitely knows more about this situation than I do.

It's been a learning experience for me too. Every bass I've ever had goes on a string adventure before settling on a destination. Some ended up taking more time and tries than others.

Ok I'm about 3 weeks or so into the Dean edge I bought and shared on here. I'm starting to get a sense of what the bass likes to do well and what I want it to do better. I've been able to set it up very nice with strings that weren't so stiff. I've had lots of time adjusting the EMG soapbars and now that I'm getting familiar I'm going to be looking at the right strings to bring it together. What strings are you guys using on your Dean basses?

For fretted solid body I usually use these almost always:
Nickel Round Wound D'Addario EXL165 (.045, 065, .085, .105) if 5 string then the next would be .135
I may use La Bella or GHS, but Nickel Round Wound and these gauges is what I like. Perhaps boring for you.
I will usually use flats or tapes on hollow/semi-hollow body basses.

Interesting. I actually prefer 125, 128 or 130 for a b string. My skin gets a rash from nickel so I stick to stainless steel. Just wanted to see what others with the same or similar bass are using. It helps me figure out what I need for myself. There's a million strings out there these days.

I have it narrowed down to the following
Markbass energy stainless
SIT Power Steels
Ernie Ball cobalt
Dunlop standard series stainless steels
Which one is going to pair the best with the EMG Hz soapbars in a Dean edge q5?
Can’t help as I’ve never tried them.

That's just what I have laying in the string pile. I have a couple more but those are specifically for certain other basses I have. I'm probably going to post it in the string forum and see what people say. I usually try everything first and post about it later but I'm kinda curious at the feedback. We have some real thoughtful string and bass nerds here who might be on to something.

Ernie Ball Cobalts work well with EMG. & get better with use.

Nice! Would you say that they would get aggressive but also balance well with them? I feel like everything I've done to this point has either been too muddy or too nasal tone to where I can't get comfortable. I've been playing with the height of the pickups and my EQ but not been satisfied. I know there's something missing that is looking to come through. I think the strings are the key.

The HZ's are not as growly as the active's or indeed the X's (which are special). The Cobalts have a unique tone
unlike any other string, when brand new it is plain to hear but as they are gigged they smooth out, into a bassy
growl. About four weeks of constant playing.

The pickups themselves I think they are awesome except for that there's just something missing that keeps making them sound like I'm missing some grit. They are awesome when driven with distortion funny enough. But clean hasn't been as in your face as I like and am used to. I'll give them a shot and see. I've had the cobalts just sitting and waiting for the right time to try them out. I find deals on strings and I just keep them stockpiled.
