Dean Club!!!

I am considering swapping in a Bartolini HR-4.6AP/918, prewired with pots/controls using the 4 pot configuration, retaining the piezo volume pot and adding a piezo buffer circuit. Has anyone done an electronics swap on their B2?
The previous owner of my B2 did...
I need a good Luther to sort my cavity out...
Glad your keeping the piezo pick up... It adds so much more dimension. A percussive low end tbump that magnetic p-ups just don't have... Like having a mini kick drum in your axx...

I ended up going with an Audere Classic preamp. It arrived yesterday. I will have the swap done in the next few days. For now I will not have piezo. I will add it back in once I have had a chance to actually plug the instrument in (which I have not been able to do yet since receiving the bass.).

I will need to add a piezo buffer circuit and a blend control.

Hey there. Just wanted to ask if anyone is familiar with the edge basses. I'm looking at one online that is an older version 5 string with EMG soapbars and passive. It looks cool but I would like to know what the string spacing is as well as if they are known to be as good as the newer ones in build quality. It's built in Korea and I see that they shifted production to China. Thanks.

I’ve gigged with the new edge 6 string. It was fine.

Which Edge?
What year Edge Bass?
Different models and different years made in different locations.

Edge Pro always used to be MIK and neck thru

Evan mucked that up in 2019 and changed it to bolt-on no longer giving the Edge Pro that distinction.

Edge 09 Playmate passive is bottom entry level

Edge 09 non-playmate passive is next

Edge 09M passive is next

Edge 1 passive is next

Edge 1Q passive is next

Edge 10A active is next (35” scale)

Edge 2 two-band active is next

Edge 3 three-band active is next

Edge 4 two-band active is next

Edge 4Q two-band active is next

Edge 4QB two-band active w/Barts is next

Edge 4 Flame 2016-2017-2018 three-band is next

Edge Pro neck thru three-band is top of line of Asian made models also 5 string version of Edge Pro

Edge 4 USA is top of line Edge

There are five string versions of the Edge 09 & Edge 1

There is the Edge 5 & Edge 6 and Edge 5Q and Edge 6Q which are really Edge 4 basses with more strings

There is also the Edge 8 which is an 8 string octave course bass.

There is also the Edge Hammer 10 which is a 10 string octave course bass played like a 5 string.

There are also some variations with a P/J setup for the Edge 1 and Edge 10A

Edge 4 have DMT pups
Edge 4Q have EMGHZ pups
Edge 4QB have Bartolini pups

Edge 2 & Edge 3 have exposed pole MM style pups.

There’s the latest Edge 1 6-string which is a passive bass.

There are also some Fretless versions of certain models including 5 & 6 string.

There is also the Edge Select Series which started in 2019 and includes Burl tops.

There are also the late 90’s early aughts Edge Select, Edge Improv and Edge Custom models made in Czech Republic which are amazing.

Late 90’s Edge Custom PZ series which had an added Piezo element in each saddle in the bridge.

There are also three signature versions:

Jon Campbell signature
Chuck Goff signature
Dink Cook signature (USA model)

Edge basses typically have tight string spacing, narrow & thin neck similar to a Jazz bass. Some are satin finish and some are gloss finish. I consider them comfortable fast playing necks.

Edge basses have been made in Korea, Indonesia, China, Czech Republic and USA.

So, what model and what year are you looking at?

What you have described would be the Edge 5Q as the quilt top Edge models had EMGHZ pups and the Edge 5 non-quilt models had DMT pups.

I can measure the string spacing on my Edge 5 fretless later today.

More recent Dean Edge basses made in Indonesia are made at the Cor-Tek factory.

Korean made Edge basses were made at both Un Sung factory and World Music factory. Un Sung factory closed in 2015.

My Edge 5 fretless which is actually a 5 string Edge 4
Pretty tight for finger players.
I'm a pick player, so I'm good with it.

this one is what I'm looking at buying. I like the semi transparent black and the goat head like headstock is cool. I like interesting ones like that or the old Tobias headstocks.

View attachment 54500451998. Ahh I remember back then. I'd love to travel back to that year.
In 1998 their nomenclature was a bit different. Yours is an Edge 5 and passive. The Select & Custom made in Korea that year were the active Edge basses.

Also, since it is a lefty it would have been $60 to $70 extra.

B Mac you gave me a hell of a rundown! Thanks! I feel like Dean will be a good fit. I play Ibanez SR and Warwicks so I like the narrow spacing. I'll get pictures and a serial number for you. I really appreciate it!
Definitely feel similar to some Ibanez' and Schecter basses.

So what is special about the Elliott Rubinson era basses? Asking because Dean is a company I just don't have any knowledge of aside from Wayne Static, Dimebag Darrell, and the bassist from weird Al endorsing them.

Dean Guitars started in 1976 by Dean Zelinsky.

Dean Zelinsky sold the business to Oscar Medeiros of Tropical Music, who gained ownership of the brand from 1986, and until 1995 focused on selling to Latin bands overseas.

Elliott Rubinson, then purchased the business in 1997, under the umbrella of Armadillo Enterprises which also owns Luna Guitars and DDrums.

Elliot hired Dean Zelinsky in 1999 as a consultant.

Dean Zelinsky left in 2008 to start DBZ Guitars.

Jon Hill was hired more or less to replace Dean Zelinsky.

Jon Hill left in 2013 to start Bootleg Guitars.

Elliot passed away from Brain cancer in 2017.

Evan Rubinson (Elliot's son) became CEO in 2016.

Evan got fired by his Mother as he was apparently embezzling from the company.

Gibson has sued Dean for making copies of the V and Explorer. This is ridiculous since Dean has been making these since the 70's.

Dean is appealing.

Jeff Berlin was using Dean basses from 1999 to 2013 before he switched to Cort.
Eric Bass from Shinedown was one of the early endorsers of the Hillsboro Bass with a signature model.
Brian Bromberg favors Dean 32" scale basses such as the Performer ABG, Radiant ABG and the Stylist B1 Hollow Body for playing Piccolo Bass.
There was also a Brian Bromberg Signature B2 Bass as well.

Since I know so very little about some things. What are the details about mine? I paid full price new. I thick that was about $838.00. Still like new as I hardly ever played it. But the gold needs polishing from time dulling it out. B-Mac, you're the man!

Had my hollow body out for parts of the last session over here. Loved listening back to it's particular "nutty" sound and will incorporate it into the next session too.
