I'm really surprized nobody here has mentioned the recent lawsuit results of Gibson VS Armadillo/Dean/Luna Guitars.
The court declared Gibson the victor. Dean infringed on trademarks for the Flying V and Z shaped Explorer, and that Gibson should've known (and taken action) four decades ago. Armadillo has to pay a dollar in damages but over $160,000 in lawyer fees
Lost in the Gibson and Armadillo Enterprises trademark controversy? Here are five key points you need to know to get up to speed.

KHD discusses the latest in this 11min video:
I, for one, completely disagree.
1) Trademarks should not last this long.
2) Dean has been using these shapes since the 70's
However, they should call the models something original, if they didn't
3) It should be past a time period of enforcement.
The Cherokee Nation tried to sue Jeep for naming their vehicles after their tribe but, weren't allowed because this was many years later.
4) A trademark is for a name or logo. Isn't it? Primarily. Therefore, the body shape of a musical instrument should not qualify in the first place.
5) There are so many guitars out there with similar shapes that only have minor differences. I'd say this sort of thing is generic. Again, manufacturers & luthiers should be making changes and offer something a little more original.
6) BLAH
Part of me wants to buy one of these forbidden shapes out of spite. lol.
I don't have any use for one, though. Except as a backup but, I have enough that could be retuned if necessary in case something that bad happens...
On a completely different topic, are we going to include Luna Guitars in this club because they share a parent company?
I only found out about this a few minutes ago while searching for sources to link. I'm not sure Luna makes basses. Maybe bass ukaleles?
