Dean Zelinsky Mule Bass

This looks pretty interesting. I'd wear the paint off that thumb rest in no time at all, but that would just add to the mojo. ;)

So what happened to DBZ Guitars? Is that dead?

Edit: looks like DBZ is now Diamond Guitars. Well, at least Zelinsky gets to keep his name this time...

Yeah, rumor has it that Zelinsky and Jeff Diamante (proprietor of Diamond Amplifiers) had a falling-out. Jeff Diamante is now head of "Guitars by Diamond", formerly DBZ.

I've been looking at the Mule bass with great interest-- particularly the four-string version in white with rosewood fretboard. I'd love it if they offered a torty pickguard for it... or a Swamp Ash body...

Heck, I've been thinking of taking up guitar for a while now. Dean's "StrettaVita," in either blonde or sunburst, is getting pretty hard to resist... especially since Laney is making an affordable Class A tube amp that would probably go great with it... okay, somebody PLEASE talk me out of joining the 6-string dark side!

Don't make Jules mad...

Tried a guitar with that z glide pattern, ill say for me, it really works I'd love to put it on a bass. I don't know if they do but I wish they had a less snakeskin/cowboy looking pattern. A straight checkerboard would suit me just fine.

I was just about to pull the trigger on a 5er when I came across a used Tune 5er on the GC used site for a price I couldn't refuse. I still want one but its on the back burner for now. I love the integrated thumb rest. As for the neck treatment I see no problem with that. I have several basses with dings in the back of the neck. I notice them when I first pick them up. But not at all after playing for a few minutes. If you are thinking about getting one subscribe to his website, I did and get discount offers all the time. I also like the fact they aren't direct F-type knockoffs. They have their own style and the weight sounds reasonable.

Got one! Its great. Needs a string tree bad and the spacing is a little big for the fingerboard (its not that bad, but I'm picky). Sounds great and the Z-Glide follows through well!

As you're the first one "in the wild" who's commented on having one of these, can you give a little more detail when you say things about the spacing and the need for a string tree? How about the tone? I have one of these on my GAS list and I've almost ordered one several times but I can't bring myself to do it without any type of real-world assessments.

It is a pattern etched into the back of the neck that reduces your contact area with the neck by about 70%, supposed to eliminate the sticky feeling a lot of players experience with a neck when their hands have a lot of moisture on them. It's been getting good reviews so far.

I'm wondering if Dean will Z-Glide a bass neck that doesn't have it.My Dean Sledgehammer for instance.

Turns out I dont need a string tree at all! The strings werent wound down the post enough. I changed strings and wound it a little lower and its fine now! No problem.

String spacing really doesn't bother me. I found it a problem when I was really trying to push the string off the fingerboard. I may try and find a Badass V, but mostly because its hard for me to play an unmodified instrument.... It's a habit.

I generally use a Lakland DJ5 for all my gigs. Its my number one. The Mule is a super jazz. It's a jazz setup with soapbars and a preamp. Its a fatter and fuller sounding because of the soapbars and I can do my tweaking when I need to. I'm not a fan of P basses, so I just switch to the neck pickup and roll back some treble.... In my opinion, makes it sound as close to a P without having a P.
