DI & Mic’ing an Amp

I agree it's odd to use the XLR output for line level rather than a mic level DI. It also seems odd (to me) to use an XLR for line in rather than a 1/4". Maybe it's for serial-chaining amps together?

In any case, I believe the OP is using the correct cable for his setup.

Don't change your XLR -> TR (1/4") cable. The Focusrite XLR input can only accept a microphone level. The 1/4" input is the only way to connect a line level, so you are exactly correct in using that cable.

Still trying to figure out the issue about the Line out getting muted when the speaker is disconnected from the amp.

I looked at the manual - the user should be able to have the speaker driven by the amp at the same time a line out signal passes through the XLR; nothing is supposed to "auto-mute" (the mute button on the front is manually controlled, and should affect all outputs).

Something else is going on here, unless there's a problem with the amp.

No

It’s a question of whether you’re monitoring through the software or by using the Focusrite’s input monitoring, which occurs downstream of the AD but doesn’t go through any software monitoring that you have enabled on your computer, most likely through the DAW you’re using.

No no, the line is fine & audible when the speaker’s disconnected from the amp and the Line Out’s going into the Focusrite.

I believe so? But again, could be a user error. Maybe something I’m doing incorrectly in GarageBand.
I won’t have my bass back till next Saturday. Wish I could fiddle w/ this before then, but that Jazz needed its Lollars & a Hipshot!
