Diabetes

You may want to ask to find out how important it is that your in-use vial of insulin be in the fridge. I know that the one you have in reserve should be cold, but I have heard that the current vial can be at room temp unless it is beastly hot in your house. Check with a pharmacist to be sure.

If you don't sleep alone, you might want to alert your sleeping partner to the signs of nocturnal low blood sugar. Low episodes in the night can be truly dangerous, and I saved my ex's life at least five times. It's scarier for the person who's conscious than for the person who's dying, let me tell you.

Enjoy all your new gear! :roflmao:

I've been in this boat for about a decade now. Found out when I went to buy a term life insurance policy and nearly failed the exam. They insured me, but for about 10x the premium.

You'll get used to the routine. The diet changes have been tough for me. My doc has advised the "divided plate" method... 1/4 plate meat/protein, 1/4 plate (max) carbs, and 1/2 plate veggies. I'm a sucker for bread and Reeses Cups, though.

Are you using actual syringes for the insulin? I have a pen-like thing where there's a twisty thing on the end to set the dose, then you stab and press the button to inject. Seems much easier than loading a traditional syringe. You might ask your doc about it.

I'll echo the advice about exercise and diet. From all the information I've read and had shoved at me (from reputable sources), it really does seem to boil down to "get some exercise, keep the weight under control, and eat healthy food". Many times they've pointed out that a good "diabetic" diet is also good for the rest of the family.

Anyway, I feel your pain...

Bummer about the insurance, I ranted about that on down b4 your post.

The Pen method was recommended by my Doc, but not covered. Would cost ME a mere $1000/month to get it.
Instead- she sent me to Wal-Mart for their "House Brand" Insulin.

I'm trying to be good about everything needed to be done. I went to Doc about neuropathy (didn't even know the name!) just that my feet were tingling. Lab tests done, and voila! Here I am!
I was probably in denial about it, Family history & all.

Years ago, My Mom (RIP) used to say "You really should watch those desserts", etc. I ignored her well-meant advice because as we know, as a Teenager, we are invincible!

Those were the good old/ bad old days!

...Thinking of buying a new Speak-on to 1/4 speaker cable, I need a shorter one!:roflmao:

Thanks, instructions w/ Wal-Mart Insulin (they call it something else, starts with an "H") say to refrigerate.
Sleeping is cool, about the same except for added angst etc.
Collateral damage is having to impose this routine et al on my BFF'Girlfriend/ Funky! Vocalist!!.
She cares & is really trying to help.
...Downside is she drives ME NUTS with her "Mother Teresa/ Dr. OZ speeches about what foods, & "If you must have bread, than it must be whole wheat!""
Of COURSE she's right & is doing so outta love...
But WOULD YOU PLEASE LET ME ENJOY MY BAGEL!!??
Isn't it enough that I had to throw away a Box of TURTLES!:roflmao:
Gawd, I loved Turtles!

Note- we reached a compromise- Whole Wheat Bagels! Mmmmm.

...I need to buy a envelope filter!:roflmao:

I'm sorry to hear about the loss of your box of Turtles.
Good luck with your condition. I hope it is manageable for you.

Should be the Poster for the American Diabetes Assoc if there is one, and it should raise $1,000,000,000,000
overnight IMO.

To think of not having a Turtle at any time soon...
Never thought I would see the day. Instead I will satisfy my sweet-tooth craving with the delectable taste of...
nothing.:roflmao:
"Vegetables" says the Doc...:rollno:

Thanks for the back-up, I'll manage & BEAT this &*((^ thing!

...Think I'll buy a Heritage B-15N:roflmao:

some stuff my doctor has told me that scared the pants off me at the time

excess sugar in your blood erodes your blood vessels
causing vision loss
aneurysms

neuropathy, which I started to develop before I changed my diet

a friend of mine got neuropathy so badly that his leg got infected, requiring amputation
the guy literally drank himself to death
he had diabetes & gout & was sitting in the bar moaning about how badly his feet hurt :bored:

he died not long after having his leg amputated
and it reminds me of my other friend who literally smoked himself to death
he had COPD, but smoked a joint for breakfast every day near the end

Well, that was cheery!:roflmao:

I'm hoping (praying, etc) that Doc is right, she says that all issues will be solved when this is under control, and she thinks it will be, and I will FIGHT this mofo *&&^^% BS Diabetes thang with all I've got.

'Of course it's all scary but- No one gets outta here alive, and its all (To me in my own non-sectarian way) in a higher powers hands. Providing I don't eat any more Turtles.

Hey here's a light-hearted joke!!:

These (2) Women in ancient Peru are being led up the Mountain to a smoldering Volcano!! They're going to be offered as SACRIFICE to the GODS!!!

One says to the other- just before they are pushed off the edge:
"Jokes's on them...I'm NO VIRGIN!"

pahrump. Try the veal.

Meantime...I'm going to look into a SingleCut Smith 4-string- Zow! BAM!:roflmao:

My wife, the finest southern chef this side of the Mason-Dixon Line was two years pre-diabetic. Metformin and such. We couldn't get our love of her fine culinary skills under control and she went full on diabetic maybe shy of a year ago. It was heartbreaking for her too...... BUT!! It did finally motivate her to get it under control. Thirty pounds shed and stays away from all the deliciousness she creates for the family... And no kidding... Just before reading this thread she was dancing thru the living room (literally) about her incredibly low blood sugar numbers. It was good to see her spirits up that way..... So, I guess all I am saying here is yeah, diabetes sucks big time. But it can be controlled. And hopefully in short order you may be dancing a jig in your living room too.

Bagels, whole wheat or otherwise, are just about the worst thing you can eat.

Worse than Turtles??!!
I kid, but is that because of the carbohydrate factor. S.O. looked at a trusted Dr's web-site that stated that a whole wheat bagel would be OK. I'm sure that opinions vary.
Thursday I see Dr. and I think get nutritional advice. I'm trying best I can to do the right thing.

Hi all! Some familiar names on this thread. Been a Type 1 diabetic since I was 18 - and since I'm just Pre-CBS vintage that gives you an idea how long that's been. On insulin all that time (with metformin too since about 1995 and a bout of ME). Went onto a pump a couple of years ago. Genius invention!

Like KBD says, the complications can be scary and serious. However, if you stick to your diet, eat healthily and follow your regime properly you can pretty much avoid them. 34 years in and I'm plodding along OK. Let me tell you, the effort you put in really is worth it - and if you have the odd slip up... well, no biggie. So long as the slip ups aren't your staple diet.

No idea what you guys thought of Obamacare etc (not my business or for discussion on a bass forum) but, I'll tell you, every single day I thank the Lord for the UK's National Health Service. For all its faults and failings it's the best thing Britain ever did in the last 100 years!

Pedals, cables, envelope filters...? @B-line 34 years of daily injections, blood tests, following diets, correcting hypos... now you REALLY know why I've got a couple of Wals! Lol!!!! Sorry if that doesn't help either! ;)

Thanks for that really inspiring post.

Having spent a good amount of time in Dixie- Holy smoke that food is off the chain!!
Etouffee's, Gumbos, and the King of all food: The fresh-baked beignet.
That (and po'boys) is what I had in Naw'leans. The South overall is an amazing place, and how lucky you are to have a spouse that excels in cooking that style.
Weight is not an issue in my case at least, but diet certainly is, and the only good thing in a convoluted sense is that Diabetes or not, I am forced to try & make good choice for my diet.

I hope I am shortly doing the Boog-a-Loo in my living room, the sooner the better. I don't like being "under" somethings control, so me & my meds are gonna FIGHT!! for my right to Par-Tay!!

...Meantime, I'm going to buy a ... Gee I don't know- Something Bass-related.
Oh yeah, a 3-unit Hercules stand!:roflmao:

Wow, everyone is coming outta the Closet!:roflmao:

You deserve those Wals! Maybe if I ordered one now, by the time it was built & delivered, I could be...better at least!
What a worthy goal & time frame!

Yes, Health Care is a mess here. It keeps getting mucked up in/ by Congress. What is their sense of urgency? They're covered tooth & nail!

And when I see the Govt. handing over, what a trillion dollars to that guy in Afghanistan, (no offense I hope to anyone who, uhh, likes him!) while many here go w/out Healthcare;
and spending zillions on some other lulu's... I better stop. Too big can of worms.
I'm fortunate that I have coverage to take care of my needs.
I'd wager to say that even with my sparse initial visits/treatments/meds, there have been several 1,000s of dollars billed.

Good for you for hanging in and TCB.

Guess I should throw those Bagels away with my Turtles, eh?
