my son just emailed me to let me know that dick dale has just passed away at 81. that's very sad news

my favorite part of the above -

“Nobody played loud, because there was no reason for them to play loud, so Leo [Fender] gave me one of his amps and told me, ‘You go beat it to death, and tell me what you think of it.’ And I started blowing them up, and they would catch on fire. I blew up over 50 of his amps,” Dale told Surfer in 2010. “He would say, “Why do you have to play so loud?” but when I put it on stage, the people’s bodies would soak up the sound because I wanted my guitar to sound like Gene Krupa’s drums.”

my son saw him at a free show at the santa monica pier. even then, he was older but my son was blown away with his playing. and we've all heard him rocking for years.

RIP Dick - one of a kind, for sure. The volume in heaven's band just went up a few notches.

He is legendary. He worked with Leo to make the showman amp as well as the reverb tank. He pretty much invented surf rock. Plus an all around cool guy.

He played a lefty guitar too, but restrung it upside down.

I saw him on the SM Pier too. In that show he claimed to string his strat with a 16-60 set. That means his low E string was as big or bigger as some basses' D. He, added, "Needless to say, I don't do a lot of string bending."

RIP. I remember a bit from 1987's Back to the Beach where Annette sees a marquee for a Dick Dale performance and she says, "Look! Dick Dale is playing tonight. Let's go see Duck." And Frankie says, "Annette, we could come back in 2005 and Dick Dale would still playing."

And it turned out to be absolutely true and then some.
