Did greenboy just kill the Fearful ?

I'm sure the authorized builders will still be able and willing to build Greenboy's designs. I don't know how successful the fEARful design was, in terms of how many got built, once the fEARless designs came out, which can only be built by authorized builders anyway.
 
I found several posts - old ones, indeed - immensely helping for the beginner i am. Threads on TB and on the BFM forum helped as well but i think i couldn't pull of the built without reading through the forum and asking questions upfront.
I would really like to preserve the last state of the forum, i have webspace that i can spare but i would need to get hands on a dump.

It may not be possible to grab a dump of a database generated forum site. Each page is created dynamically as you query the database.

You're right, i misunderstood this.
Several european forum users had successful builds with 12mm plywood and greenboy stated somewhere that the difference is ok. Bill Fitz Maurice said the same. So i'm hoping for the best.

P.S.: That's for example the kind of information from the forum i meant being valuable for me. User experience from others.
 
I'm glad you got it to work but the problem is the difference in thickness. Doing what you suggest, the parts will fit poorly and the internal dimensions will be different. Don't know how much that will matter but .7mm over the area of just the baffle is quite a lot of volume.Doesn't matter what is on you tape measure (can you buy a tape measure that is ONLY metric? I've never seen one in the UK) The boards are still .7mm thinner than the plans call for. Unless you can get imported plywood.

Volume differences in the realm of +/- 5% or so are probably no big deal for many or maybe most of us, but it's not a bad idea to confirm port tuning on any cab you build and tune to taste anyway, as Dave often recommended. If you use the alt. lower tuning the cab volume may already go down by at least as much as you're talking about, but I've never done the math. There's enough wiggle room allowed in the designs to install a plate amp in the cab with no problem, for instance. FWIW, when I built one of the very first 12/6 cabs I used 3/4" plywood (very high grade surplus I had on hand) and went with a bit smaller internal volume than the original plans specified. Dave ended up downsizing the final version to something very close to what I used, because he agreed that it just made the cab more convenient. I certainly don't recommend using 3/4" or 18mm stock, that cab weighed something like 65 pounds.:confused:
 
Never really understood what happened. It seemed like he said, "Here are free plans for speakers, Enjoy!" and then was upset that he didn't make money off it. Meanwhile, regular cabs got a lot better.
To my memory I think you're right.

It seemed like a decent business plan, though. Release a freeware version of a thing to develop a reputation, then make an improved one that people would have to pay for. He probably could have promoted that model a bit better.

I didn't get that from the forum. I figured it out myself. There was no advice on this issue on the forums and no active users to even consider the question. @Passinwind is probably correct that it doesn't really matter that much but my OCD insisted I get it as close as I possibly could. The cut sheet I posted should yield a box with almost identical internal dimensions to the official Greenboy box using 12mm ply instead of 12.7mm ply. Feel free to use it, or not.

@Passinwind I don't intend to schlep my box. I intend using it just for a home studio. Is there any sonic advantage (or disadvantage) to using the heavier ply? The weight wouldn't matter to me but I'd have to re-do my cut sheet again.

I wanted to avoid the complex bracing scheme, as woodworking is not my forte and there was a push to get out a workable passive crossover design for the early adopters. Nah, don't change what you're doing now. Being OCD is not a such a bad thing in this case IMHO. Make something you believe in to the best of your ability, you'll never go wrong.

I know you addressed this to @Passinwind, but I vote yes, there are a couple of advantages to building it out of 18mm ply if you don't mind the increase in weight. The individual panels will have lower resonance and the joints will be more sound and easier to construct. I never did support the concept of unreinforced butt joints in 12mm ply, regardless of whatever miracle adhesive you used.

The small difference in the internal volume created by changing to ply that is 0.7mm smaller is absolutely inconsequential. Don't worry about it.

Heh...I used pocket joints, 3/4" stock, a few cleats on the parts you might drop onto, and Titebond. ;)

Tbh, that kind of OCD can be best when you're messing with stuff you don't fully understand.

Using a 3/4" ply, or 18mm-ish, is totally fine as long as the internal volume of the cabinet is as close to the same as possible. The only thing I can think of is the weight of the thing.

Amazing to think this all started with a thread about putting the new , at that time , Kappalite 3015lf into a three way Carvin 1505 PA cab . It worked great but Greenie decided to take it up several notches and design his own cab for the new neo driver . To say it was a success would be a big understatement . I've built three GB cabs , a 12/6 , a 15sub and a 15/6 . All were amazing . My first 12/6 was in late 2006 and he PMed me about the horn I used , a P-Audio . He was very accessable then . It's been a long time from then to now and I can see with all the time and effort how it could weigh a person down . Here's a couple pics of the cab I built back then . To me he is a saint for sharing all this all these years .

I use the finger joint, finger tip method for estimating tbsp / tsp when cooking.

  • 1/8 teaspoon = 1 pinch between thumb, index and middle fingers
  • 1/4 teaspoon = 2 pinches between thumb, index and middle fingers
  • 1/2 teaspoon = Cup your hand, pour a quarter sized amount in your palm
  • 1 teaspoon = Top joint of index finger
  • 1 tablespoon = Entire thumb
  • 1 cup = Entire fist; heaping handful

Based on my recent experience as someone completely new to building, I have to agree with @bpc

When I was doing my build the forum had virtually no activity, and I had better luck getting answers to my questions here than on the Greenboy forum. Even the old threads on that forum weren't as helpful as I'd hoped they'd be because so many were old with dead image links. All in all I didn't get anything from the Greenboy forum that I couldn't get here.

Oh and I did donate to the Greenboy forum :meh:
