Different kind of overdrive request

Yeah, finding individual pedals I like is easy, I do it every day around here (damn GAS) but finding pedals that work well together to build the sounds I need often proves tough.

So it's good that bongo stepped forward. Not only does he have the pedals (and comp knowledge) that I wanted to try combining but was familiar with the tone I'm going for and how it was originally obtained.

Exactly, a nice sounding pedal is no trick, but to find one that fits into your setup perfectly is a feat.

It was cool of Bongo, and severly lucky too.:bassist:

The comp/limiters that I have tried that come closest to this sound are the Retrospec Squeezebox, Valley People Dyna-Mite, and the EL Distressor. Whether it's worth the cost, bulk, and other material hassles to include one of those in your rig... hard to say.
I do have an Alesis Micro Limiter though . . .
A decent unit certainly but not going to be any great tone addition in this context.
Side note: bongo have you considered changing your username? It's only on my mind because I'm changing mine and I remember you saying that you only chose bongomania because you thought you had to declare your drum business. I still like Machacadora. Anyway, thanks again.
I have thought about it, but (a) I couldn't decide between Machacadora and some OVNI variation (noting especially that there is a UFO fanatic who posts prolifically on all kinds of forums, using the name ovnilab  )... and (b) the new rules state that you can only change your name from a pseudonym to your real name or vice versa, not from one pseudonym to another.

Oh, bongo - first you get my hopes up with the notion that this tone is not unobtainable and then dash my dreams with your super expensive limiter suggestions.

Le sigh.

;)

If I can get in the ballpark while forgoing the limiter that may be the path to take. Which would mean I just need a Holy Fire.

Edit: As for name changes, the since banned Chris2112 changed to Barryonyx so it must not be a hard and fast rule. Especially if you chose your original name due to a misunderstanding of the CUP. Is OVNI the spanish acronym for UFOs?

Yeah, because it's not like your real name is radically awesome or anything...;)

(I'm sorry, I just love your name.)

And sorry about your disappointment, BigO. Are you still thinking about picking up a Holy Fire?

Oh yeah, absolutely. Even if I can't nail that tone, the notion that I can get closer than I thought is still very cool. I was just joking with bongo a bit.

?

This is why I didn't say anything :smug: those where the exact units I knew he would list :smug: And the last time I saw a price for a Retrospec Squeezebox it was the same as my sunn cost me...................................................... oh yeah a vintage tube sunn head will get very close to the sound you want.....................;)
Then all you have to worry about is dealing with the baggage of a 40+ year tube amp that takes a tube no one makes anymore:hmm:

Oh and [Invalid or Expired Link Removed] is a clip of it for fun, now this isn't with my tone rolled off and I am really pushing it but you get the idea.

I'll echo the Gemini Drive recommendations. I was able to get a sound similar to what I think you're looking for when I ran it after my BassIQ at nil sensitivity, but it was really less about the overdrive half of the pedal and more about tweaking the tone knob on the clean boost side. That being said, the Gemini Switch focuses the overdrive on your low mids (~350hz center as I recall). Flip the switch, blend the clean and overdrive @ 50/50, and then tweak the tone and gain knobs. I've auditioned the Barber LTD, Tech 21 VT, Fulltone OCD, and some less-TB-popular pedals like the CMATMODS Signa Drive, and my guitarist's Keeley-modded TS9DX but have not sold my Gemini (nor my Sparkle Drive).

It's a really flexible pedal and sounds totally different depending on how I EQ my bass. I can get a really nice warm overdrive if I cut the treble on my active Jazz but I can also get a plethora of other completely usable sounds out of it seemingly without regard for where I have the knobs set.

After bongo's post I'm all set to try a Holy Fire. I think it's lack of color (and headroom) are the two biggest draws for me in terms of this application. I'll try it with the Moog and probably the FX25 to see which works better.

But if the Holy Fire doesn't work, I think the Gemini might be the next OD I test drive, assuming I can find one and/or Os starts building again. I've been curious about it for a long time anyway.

In any event, I'll post some clips when I get my Holy Fire. Anything I can do to get close to that classic dub tone I'll do. Well short of buying $1000+ compressor/limiters. ;)

Hasn't someone around here got a Retrospec Squeezebox? Or used to at least. I'm sure I've seen one around here somewhere.
