It's a very new thing, yes. But don't ask me how or why, it was Sheldon's solution to a few people who said the D & A strings felt a bit loose or something along those lines. If ever there was such an issue before that string tree, I can confirm that the little tree must be doing a good job as all the strings are very taught and resonant on this bass.

FWIW, i don't the SJ4's need the string tree (at least, i haven't seen any SJ4's with string trees). But I agree, kind of a bummer, since that was a major 'flaw' in Leo's originals that Dingwall [at least seemed] to want to do away with using some nifty headstock designs...

Yeah it's probably no big deal. I'm just wondering what happened in 2010 for him to recommend no wax needed on the necks. I like a tung oil finish, so we'll see how this Super J i have on the way has it's neck finished.

He posted as much on the Dingwall forum, but i'll just repost it here...

As of 2010, they use satin poly on all necks because of the diminished quality of the Tung oil used previously. Not sure if my incoming Super J will have a satin poly neck or the older tung oil finish...

Yeah man! The baltic amber guard is an especially nice touch :) Everything about the bass is just super sweet, and it has that
"J" thing happening for sure.

Passive tones are pretty vintagey i would say. Interestingly, when i dig in over either pickup I get a tone through the amp thats like tube breakup or something. Interesting! It's not the output of the bass is super hot or anything, i think it's something special about Sheldon's pickups. Whatever it is, I like it!

I'm almost 99% sure mine is finished in oil/wax (some 2010 models have a satin poly finish due to quality issues with previous tung oil used by Dingwall), and being so, is VERY thin. One big pro to the satin poly over the previous oil/wax blend is the consistent finish w/o feeling the neck seams (i am not the only one to experience this...several other Dingwall owners have said as much on the Dingwall forum and elsewhere).

Like i said, I am happy i can feel them! That means the finish is barely there. Couple swipes up and down the neck and we should be good. They recommend Kiwi neutral shoe polish (or any good silicone-free carnauba polish really) periodically so i'll be sure to do that after taking down the seams. It's probably due to humidity changes and such. I don't see it as a defect or a negative at all (again, i'm relieved i got the oil/wax instead of poly anyways!)

I'm pretty familiar with the situation. I was just recommending you sit on it for a little while before removing wood.

AB I 6'er in whalepool blue.

i'm not NEAR as knowledgable about woods and what goes into making an awesome bass, i just know this is the most comfortable and beautiful thing i've ever played on. the few times i've picked up any of my other basses since i got this have just felt wrong. looking forward to ordering another so that i have a back up/alternate that i WANT to play.
